CNN/AP: Floods force hundreds from New England homes
Floods force hundreds from New England homes
Sunday, May 14, 2006

A pedestrian walks along flooded streets Sunday in Peabody, Massachusetts.

CONCORD, New Hampshire (AP) -- Torrential rain forced hundreds of people from their homes in parts of New England on Sunday, as water flowed over dams and washed out roads.

The governors of New Hampshire and Massachusetts declared states of emergency, activating the National Guard to help communities respond to the storm. Maine's governor also declared a state of emergency for one county.

"It's a very serious situation," said New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, adding that forecasters were predicting 12 to 15 inches of rain by the end of the storm in parts of southern New Hampshire. "It continues to change and the situation continues to worsen."

A dam in Milton, New Hampshire, was in danger of failing, which could send a 10-foot wall of water downstream, the National Weather Service said in a bulletin. People downstream were being evacuated in the town.

The state Office of Emergency Management said at least a dozen dams were being closely watched....

1. Yeah, it's kinda wet in RI.
My mother lives up the road from Milton, NH, and she says it's really wet up there.

Happy mother's day, DMM. Thanks for thinking of us wet folks.

Bill

Significant Floods of the 20th Century

During the 20th century, floods were the number-one natural disaster in the United States in terms of number of lives lost and property damage. They can occur at any time of the year, in any part of the country, and at any time of the day or night. Most lives are lost when people are swept away by flood currents, whereas most property damage results from inundation by sediment-laden water. Flood currents also possess tremendous destructive power, as lateral forces can demolish buildings and erosion can undermine bridge foundations and footings leading to the collapse of structures. The accompanying map and table locate and describe 32 of the most significant floods of the 20th century.

15. If it keeps raining in Michigan....
It's been raining here for about a week. I live on high ground, with no river around for miles, but for people who live along the Clinton or Rouge Rivers, it could get bad. They probably already have some basement flooding in the areas closest to those rivers. I by-passed 1-75 this morning due to construction, and drove in on Oakland Dr. There were a lot of areas with water over the road.

Luckily, the Detroit River doesn't flood. It's a connector between lakes, and Lake Erie's and St. Clair's water levels are low enough to handle any excess there.

16. We had fun looking at the radar maps of the Great Lakes.
What do you call a storm system that rotates counterclockwise over a low pressure point and spits out thunderstorms and high winds around that point? Maes me wonder what would happen if the pressure differential between the high and low were greater and the storm got a little more organized. Lake Erie gets pretty warm in the summer, and I suspect all the Great Lakes are a bit warmer than usual.
