Pentagon Debunks Reports on Osama-Saddam Ties
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/editorandpublisher/headlines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2030480

Several newspapers and other media outlets had egg on their face Monday after reporting or endorsing a Weekly Standard story revealing new evidence of an "operational relationship" between Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

Several outlets, including the New York Post, The Washington Times and FOX News, ran with the story. There was just one problem: On Saturday, the Pentagon issued a press release stating that "news reports that the Defense Department recently confirmed new information with respect to contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq ... are inaccurate."

Despite this, the New York Post on Monday titled its editorial on the subject: "Bush Was Right."

"Bush was right," they'll believe it for a long, long time. And you know the retraction will be on page 48, buried in the middle of the box scores.

2. Hell, nobodies read E&P but newspaper guys

6. Did the Pentagon set them up in order to knock them down?
Wouldn't be surprised...

It also gives the Pentagon a chance to officially say there was no link and make the whole connection seem like it was the press that caused that little "misunderstanding" with the public.

9. Right wingers and memos
There sure are a lot of stories about memos in the wing nut press lateley. I tend to not believe them since they all appear in a reletively short period of time and with the same MO.

10. William Safliar cites the Feith memo today
And claims that it "proves" that all the other intelligence denying a link between Al Qaeda and Saddam was dead wrong.

The only thing "wrong" is the Feith memo. The only "dead" are American service men and women by the hundreds, and Iraqi civilians by the thousands. Nice job, Mr. Safliar. Will we see a "mea culpa" that he prescribes for everyone else in a future column of his? I for one will not hold my breath.
