Mark Kroeker will be in charge of reforming Liberia’s local police force. He’ll also lead 1,000 foreign police officers and 15,000 peacekeepers enforcing a peace agreement signed in August, which ended a decade-long civil war.
The Liberian police force is currently paid irregularly and is blighted by corruption. Even after the civil war officially ended, looting and sporadic fighting have kept Liberia off balance.
