Ham found in sabotaged sheep feedlot | Sydney Morning Herald
Ham found in sabotaged sheep feedlot
November 20, 2003 - 1:22PM

Up to 70,000 sheep bound for the Middle East - but held up after animal liberationists claimed to have sabotaged their feed with pig meal - could have eaten shredded ham found in a Portland feedlot today, a chief veterinary officer said.

The shredded ham found in one of two feedlots believed to have been contaminated by Animal Liberation activists this week would undergo further testing, chief veterinary officer Hugh Millar told reporters in Melbourne.

The sheep will remain in two feedlots at Portland on Victoria's south-west coast while authorities continue investigations.

The Animal Liberation group claims members used pig meal to contaminate food and water supplies for the sheep.

Contamination would mean the sheep would not be fit for human consumption, with legislation outlawing the feeding of animal products to ruminants following outbreaks of mad cow disease in Europe.

2. I don't think they poisoned them
The point was to make them "unfit" for slaughter and consumption. After the BSE (aka mad cow) problems in Europe, it's illegal to export livestock that had been fed any animal remains. Feeding ham to the sheep, has made those sheep unfit.

3. The sheep were unfit because ham (pig) is forbidden to Muslims.

7. No
It's unfit for any people to eat now, not just Muslims. No matter your religion, the risk of Mad Cow and other prion-based diseases spreading through the food chain means no one can now eat them.

11. So what are they good for now?
They can't be eaten. Are they usable for wool? Are they decent wool sheep?

Or will they simply be killed because no one will foot the bill for their feed?

13. They'll be killed. There's no reason the owner would compound the loss.
Another idiotic stunt from which no one...and no animal wins.

21. Might as well have poisoned them...
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 07:43 AM by BiggJawn
What? the ALF-types are gonna adopt all these sheep for pets? They've been contaminated with animal meal in their feed. They are unfit for food now and forever for both Infidel and Muslim alike. They will be slaughtered ANYWAY, but now the carcasses will be come a potential pollution problem.

Way to go, Animal Liberators! You guys should eat more fish. It's BRAIN FOOD....

4. What an excellent Strategy
The sheep have new and exciting food for a day or two, they get a reprieve from imminent slaughter. Of course, we can now assume that they will spend the rest of their lives happily chewing grass on the side of a beautiful mountain in New Zealand or something.
Oh I forgot - Sheep are called 'mountain maggots' by ecologists.
You just can't win.

8. Convoluted logic
Animal Liberationists protest the immenent slaughtering of sheep headed to the M.E.

because

Animal Lib's are against the consumption of meat

So

Animal Lib's sabotage the sheep shipment heading to the M.E.

by

Feeding the sheep a MEAT PRODUCT

So

Aren't the Animal Lib's contributing to the industries they so vehemently oppose by buying the ham they fed to the sheep???

???

14. Is it possible the animal-liberators didn't want the sabotage discovered?
"Haha!

You now get the brain-eating disease.

You ate tainted meat. Serves you right."

The way some of them talk I wonder at times.

22. but does it matter?
the fact is, Animal LIb's are against ANY use of animal products, including meat.

So they try to avert the use of these sheep as meat by feeding them--ta-da---MEAT.

In order for them to have gotten the ham to feed the sheep, they would have either had to BUY the meat from a store (horror of horrors!) or slaughter the pig themselves---BOTH are actions they're vehemently opposed to.

I don't care what they wanted the 'end result' to be, but I just find the hypocracy amazing that it's okay for THEM to buy pork, but not okay for anyone else to buy meat, or consume meat, or anything like that.

Kind of like...I don't know.....teaching someone that stealing is wrong by burgularizing their house.....

9. So, what happens with these sheep now? Pet food?
Humans can't eat them, and since they appear to have already been destined for slaughter in the Middle East, are they considered suitable for wool production? If not, no one will simply keep 70,000 sheep around, feed them, protect them, without some kind of profit. Breeding stock instead, or are they considered unsuitable for that too? Or will they just be slaughtered for pet food? Have the animal rights activists really done anything to save these animals, or just bought them a few more days of life?

23. Yep. Another hypocritical action of theirs
Hypocritical action #1---buying or procuring a MEAT PRODUCT to feed to animals (remember--no one should eat meat, or kill animals for food!!!)

Hypocritical action #2---doing NOTHING to save the lives of these animals. They're going to be slaughtered anyways, but instead of the end of their life having a purpose (i.e. feeding someone), they're going to die for NO reason. THey will be incenerated and dumped in a pit.

So where once the life and death of these animals had a purpose (meat, clothing, etc), now there is none. These animals will die just the same, and the Animal LIbs will feel they've done something heroic and vain.

They've done nothing but show how short-sighted they are, and how easy it is for them to wash their hands of the actions they curse the rest of us for (procuring meat, using animal product as food, causing the deliberate destruction of an animal, etc)

10. I have a feeling they will be disposed of.
Like the time those chicken farmers had to kill thousands of birds because of disease or whatever. They tossed them into wood chippers.

DOn't foret all the wild birds and mammals that the released minks killed.

Their "liberation" was an ecological disaster.

15. Islamic suicideTerrorists killed & buried wrapped in fresh pig hides ended
attacks in India in the late 1800's, that condemned the terrorists to hell. actually pigs are cheaper than Bombs and would actually do MORE damage if dropped from 40,000 feet... they couldn't even touch the mess to clean it up.... what is the Terminal velocity of a 400 pound hog?
:wtf:

19. If pigs could fly...
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 04:22 AM by R Hickey
Is this our answer to the terrorist's 'dirty bomb?'

Could a litter of piglets be fit into a MERV (multiple re-entry vehicle)? What about piglet-cluster-bombs? How about a pop-up exploding-pig-land-mine?

Then our military could launch "Operation Pig-Iron Hammer."
