Missing opposition figures in Philippine military custody
May 24, 2006, 16:23 GMT
Manila - Five officials of an anti-government organization in the Philippines who were seized by gunmen in a raid two days ago turned up in military custody on Wednesday and were charged with rebellion by the justice department.
State prosecutor Emmanuel Velasco said the five officials of the Union of the Masses for Democracy and Justice (UMDJ) were allegedly plotting to overthrow the government and assassinate President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and four cabinet members.
'The plot to assassinate ranking government officials is part of the group's destabilization activities aimed at toppling the Arroyo administration,' he said.
The five UMDJ officials were earlier reported abducted by their families while meeting in a house in Quezon City in metro Manila late Monday.
