FORT LAUDERDALE – Miriam Oliphant, the embattled Broward Elections Supervisor, was removed from office Thursday morning and the governor's office was expected to soon name a replacement.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Oliphant was served with an executive order signed by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush removing her from office. It was served by Broward deputies at her main office at the Government Center.

She was reported in a meeting with her staff in her office at the Government Center and unavailable for comment after the announcement was made.

Locks were ordered replaced in her offices and deputies were expected to take up positions and secure the voting offices, equipment and records.

1. Is she party affiliated ?
I googled her, but I find no reference to her party affiliation.

Is Jeb positioning for an easier assault on the election next year?

Cheers

5. She needed to be removed
She is probably one of the most incompetent public officals in America. Her removal was warranted, and has been requested for a time.

9. Liberal media?
I guess her fellow democrats who have been asking for her removal for a long time are part of the vast right wing conspiracy and in Jebs pocket.

The evidence of her incompetence and the massive mismanagement of her office is overwhelming.

Frankly, Jeb should have done this over a year ago.

She is arrogant, incompetent, and a discredit to both her party affiliation and to her race - the latter which she manipulates at the slightest challenge against her.

She is a very ignorant individual who absolutely never takes responsibility for her actions or for the conduct of her office. Both of which have been disgraceful.

She blames every moment of her inadequacy on either others or non-existent racial elements which are only in the figments of her imagination as attempts to justify her abject stupidity.

She is a disgrace and it's inconceivable as to why she was not removed much, much earlier....

... if only to save face for the Democratic party and for her fellow Americans of color.

The prick, Jeb, did us all a favor today. Irrespective of any hidden motivations which remain, yet, to be seen.

3. I thought she was appointed....
I read an article a way back that said she was such a disaster that democrats in the area were asking Jeb to do this.

From further down in your article:

Last Friday, three former employees filed a federal lawsuit against Oliphant, alleging she fired them last month because they helped expose mismanagement in her office. According to the suit, Oliphant tried to force employees to lie to prosecutors during the recent investigation of her office and threatened anyone who didn't do as told.

4. Florida people please
ring in with some more information on this. It sounds quite disturbing on it's face but would like to know more. I am looking for the Tallahassee Democrat to see if anything is in it on this.

7. Are those the South Florida Democrats who supported Jeb last year?
Just wondering.

What worries me is that Jeb and Glenda Hood are now in total charge there without legislative oversight.

I am not so sure that is an improvement.

Alter all.. Jeb did promise to his brother, once again, that he WILL win the Florida election.

14. Wasn't she filing a lawsuit about the way the machines were bought?
I can not find the article now, but I read something about it. She was going to pursue it on the grounds of something wrong in the bidding process. Some of the people she was going against were Democrats, I think.

18. Oliphant objected to pressure to buy ES&S BBV machines; ES&S
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 03:46 PM by lostnfound
Oliphant wanted Sequoia Voting Systems, not ES&S, because it had more experience with touch-screen voting.

I found this: http://www.securepoll.com/Archives/Archive47.htm
Pete Corwin, an assistant county administrator handling the negotiations with ES&S, said the contract could be broken by the county in January, but that would delay the process since commissioners would then have to start negotiations with another company. Commissioners are feeling pressured to move quickly, because the new equipment must be in place for the September 2002 elections.

Buying machines from a company other than ES&S is exactly what Broward County Supervisor of Elections Miriam Oliphant said she wanted to do. She wants the big screens and most recent technology.

"Why are we spending so much time with this particular company when there are other vendors who can do the job?" Oliphant asked.

A lobbyist for ES&S said some of Oliphant's complaints are personal, left over from her election to the supervisor's post last year. Russ Klenet, the company's chief representative in Broward, backed Oliphant's opponent, David Brown.

"We have the best machine," said Klenet, who will make a $25,000 bonus if the contract with ES&S is signed. "Miriam Oliphant just hates me like poison because I believe the voters of Broward County made a mistake when they elected her."

Oliphant said her comments were solely based on the merits of the ES&S machines.

20. Good riddance
at least now Jeb & Co. won't be able to blame all the election day screw-ups on incompetent local Democratic elections officials. The only thing that bothers me is that the local Democrats didn't force her out first. I don't think we should tolerate incompetence bordering on the criminal simply because someone has a (D) by their name.

22. I don't believe
the local democrats have the power or authority to remove her. They have been pleading with Jeb to remove her for well over a year. And she has accused those who wanted her removed of doing so because she is black.

No Miriam, they wanted you gone because you are incompetent and an embarassment!

23. Some of "the skinny"
This article has a snippet on her.

http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BROWARD_VOTING?SITE=1010WINS&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Bush appointed 60-year-old Brenda Snipes - a retired elementary school principal who, like Oliphant, is a black Democrat - to the elections post. Oliphant's supporters had claimed she was targeted because of her race.

I didn't know your post contained all the info I was going to get from that link.

A retired elementary school principal and former area school superintendent in Broward County, who is a black Democrat. Sounds good so far. I hope she's ready to bring out the "swat" paddle for 2004!

Edit- Thanks.
