Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry criticizes President Bush and accuses him of siding with pharmaceutical and insurance companies in a new television ad that began airing Thursday in New Hampshire.
"George Bush believes that what's good for the drug companies and insurance industries is good for America, and he's wrong," the Massachusetts senator tells a group of people in the ad.
Kerry, who trails front-runner Howard Dean in state polls by double digits, had been absent from the New Hampshire airwaves during much of October. With his support in public opinion surveys slipping, Kerry returned to the air earlier this month, spending about $175,000 on ads there in just over two weeks.
The campaign would not disclose the cost of the new 30-second spot, which is airing in the Manchester media market but not in the more expensive Boston market where Kerry bought airtime earlier this year. However, the buy is large enough that the average person in New Hampshire could see the commercial five times over the course of its run.
The new ad includes images of pill bottles and a doctor attending to a patient. In the spot, Kerry also touts his plan for ensuring Americans have affordable health care, saying he can challenge the drug companies to lower prescription prices and insurance companies to lower their coverage costs
