Bush says US troop levels in Iraq could rise

LONDON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) held out the possibility that US troop levels in Iraq (news - web sites) could rise despite his intention to begin drawing down their numbers next year.

"We'll match the security needs with the number of troops necessary to secure Iraq," Bush told reporters at a news conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites).

"We could have less troops in Iraq," he said. "We could have the same number of troops in Iraq. We could have more troops in Iraq. Whatever is necessary to secure Iraq."

There are currently some 130,000 US soldiers in Iraq and the Pentagon (news - web sites) has said it would like the number lowered to about 105,000 by the spring as more Iraqi troops are trained and able to take over the stabilization effort.

White House officials played down the significance of Bush's comments, saying that the situation was continually under review and that the overall intent to eventually reduce the number was unchanged.
