<snip>
A man who says he has no memory of repeatedly trying to strangle his girlfriend as they laid in bed has been jailed for life.

Andrew Gibbons, 41, has been convicted of attempting to murder Nicola Tear on December 27, 2002, after he suddenly sat up in bed in the middle of the night.

Gibbons of Horrels Road, Milton Damerell, North Devon, was convicted of the charge after a two-day trial at Exeter Crown Court in July.

He had denied the accusation.
During the trial, the jury heard that Miss Tear and her three children were staying with Gibbons and his son at his rented house in Milton Damerell
