Has this been reported elsewhere yet? Will we be able say that "Bush gassed his own people" now?

Jay

Note To Mods: This probably violates all LBN rules, but it is important.

20. because "less lethal" is good for everyone, doncha know?
Police State Analysts have shown that the diets of most vegan demonstrators are severely lacking in cayenne pepper, rubber-coated metal balls and other exciting nerve agents. The police merely do what they can to ensure a balanced meal.

12. Regarding what's being protested:
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 04:48 PM by Baconfoot

http://ftaaimc.org/en/static/faq.shtml

What is the FTAA?
The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is the expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to every country in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, except Cuba. Negotiations began right after the launch of NAFTA in 1994 and are set to be completed in 2005.

Current Status of FTAA

All the negotiating groups have held meetings at two to three month intervals during the last two years. Negotiators have laid out the positions of their governments on the nine core issues. During the last three meetings?in Quebec City in April 2000, Buenos Aires in April 2001, and in Quito, Ecuador in October 2002?negotiators tried to work out differences in the draft texts. The next FTAA summit will take place in Miami, Florida in November 2003. Major citizen protests are expected to take place.

Despite growing public opposition throughout the hemisphere, FTAA backers still want to finish negotiating the treaty by the end of 2004, and for it to go into effect by 2005.

All on Clinton's watch.

Here's a refresher: http://www.kmud.org/support/video/fireintheeyes/

"Some of us sense that America is growing into an authoritarian society. The hierarchy of power that is institutionalized within large corporations is essentially a dictatorship"
James Ficklin, Producer of the documentary Fire in the Eyes

23. From FTAAIMC: Identifying Provocateurs
It is actually not to hard to tell a police provocatuer from a real direct action activist: What is the probable outcome of what the suspect person proposes?

When the police outnumber the crowd or the scenario for the demonstration requires restrictive rules of engagement to work, police provocateurs will throw rocks that deliberatly miss and encourage others to do so. They will even encourage people to make molotovs in some limited cases, if they can prevent their use or limit them to things they don't mind seeing burn.

On the other hand, when it is the POLICE that are outnumbered or the CITY is in a scenario where things need to be kept quiet, the reverse is also true. During R2K, the undercovers were screaming for nonviolence, as the Mayor feared a violent convention. The same guy that will throw rocks from a crowd of 100 at 10,000 cops will scream for nonviolence and pull your arm down if you are throwing stones from a crowd of 10,000 at 100 cops. In short, he will do whatever is in the best interests of his compatriots.

Therefore, his actions will be observably OPPOSITE what the scenario really calls for on serious examination. It can be hard for someone committed ONLY to ONE tactic to tell this, of course, but it should be obviouls to an "all the tools in the toolbox" supporter. If a person consistantly calls for the same thing rather it works or not(throws stones in both cases above), they probably are just inexperienced.

In this action, stones thrown from the AFL march have different political consquences than stones thrown from any other action. They promote strife between AFL organizers and other activists, they allow the cops to run up arrest totals from the union march if and only if thrown from easily arrestable places. The most dangerous provocateur, however, would NOT be dressed as an anarchist but as a union member, and would get the cameras on himself if he were to throw a stone in person. If he is dressed like an anarchist, nobody will be fooled and nobody will blame the union(except maybe FOX news).

Another form of provocateur will attempt to get a crowd to do things that will backfire in a political sense. This is a game two can play, and years ago activists in DC did this to an antiabortion group by putting some fake "white power" racists in the front who chanted viciously racist antiabortion slogans when the antis neared teh Supreme COurt and all thsoe press cameras. The rest of the crowd took up the slogans, to the great embarassment of the organizers!

More seriously, the cops in Genoa set up a complete fake black bloc that burned and trashed working class people's cars and stores. They were caught because someone saw and photographed Molotov cocktails being handed to them out of the trunk of a police car. Fortunately, this kind of undercover is easily identified by his choice of targets. Assuming a militarily plausable scenario, the guy who stones the Gap is a protestor, the guy who stones the small immigrant owned clothing store is a COP.

What did that person do to be tazered? Nothing from what I could see. That small group of UNARMED kids were literally surrounded by cops all pointing tazers. Then one trigger-happy cop puts the kid down with no provocation. Truly disgusting and absolutely frightening.

I just watched the videos..

Who the hell trains your police??

That was disgusting sight... police with what look like baseball bats..tear gas.. riot shields..

Ugghh..

I hope those people will be alright. :(

It looked like scenes from some 3rd world dictatorship, not a 21st century democracy.

Why'd the police go tooled up like that? Why did they all have riot gear on and baseball bats for what looked like a peaceful protest?

Bush is a hypocrit.. simple as that.. how can he come to the UK and say he welcomes protests, and then deal with protests in his own country like that?

the Bushistas political agenda--FTAA. Unbeknown to US taxpayers, $8.5 million for *security* in MIami was included in that huge $87 bln Iraqi bill they recently passed. That's how they're gonna make Patriot Act II law as well, slip it in bit-by-bit into huge spending bills. This kinda sh*t is done in Washington all the time.
