Tribal council outlaws abortion (South Dakota)
Tribal Council Outlaws Abortion
President suspended for alleged donations

"The Oglala Sioux tribal council banned all abortions on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and suspended President Cecelia Fire Thunder on Tuesday, charging that she solicited donations on behalf of the tribe for a proposed abortion clinic without the council's approval.

"It was unauthorized political activity," said Will Peters, a tribal council representative from the Pine Ridge district. 'It's just a matter of failing to communicate not only with the governing body but with the people that she was elected to serve....'"

Argus Leader - June 1

*******************************

Oddly enough, a May 27 story noted that council representative Peters would move for a referendum to let Lakota women vote on what the tribe's position on abortion would be. But I guess he couldn't wait. He is quoted in this earlier article as saying: "And I have to think of the well-being of the people, and I am a little bit afraid of the kind of radical nincompoops an abortion clinic might attract."

1. Well you know....
you can't let those uppity women decide on anything for themselves.

You've got to nip it...nip it in the bud

And by the way, this whole post: :sarcasm:

I can understand the concern for the safety of the tribe, but they are also on protected land and anyone coming on to that land would be trespassing and subject to federal laws and fines. That guy is a total chickenshit.

4. I would have thought
that Native Americans, First Peoples, would of had a better view of their women.

2. Banning abortion on the reservation will likely.....
increase the population of Native Americans, a traditionally Democratic constitutency. In 20 years, those young Natives are likely to tip the electoral balance and turn some sparsely populated red states blue. In other words, there is a side benefit to banning abortion: a potential Democratic majority.

3. Pine Ridge is literally a Third World country
80% unemployment, etc. etc. etc. This is not good news. I have Oglala friends who live on the Rez, and the council is beyond political -- its running is Byzantine... The President is heartily disliked by a certain group of male leaders. This is NOT a good thing.

And, building a Dem base on the backs of women and their rights isn't something I want to do.

7. Yes, in the cases of rape and incest. Keep on raising your strawmen,

it's fun to watch them burn.

11. ugghhh that comment left a bad taste in my mouth.
so now we should be applauding ANYTHING, as long as it provides us with more (potential) Democrats??!! :wtf: I hope I never hear these words again: "there is a side benefit to banning abortion: a potential Democratic majority". Go tell women (everywhere!) who can't even afford basic healthcare for the children they DO have that they shouldn't worry, their job is to spawn the next generation of Dems, because we all know that there is a tendency for (at least urban) impoverished to lean Democratic! I'd rather put my time and effort into educating my own lazy ignorant generation. There's enough of us.

17. It will more likely increase death from sepsis due to
botched backroom do it yourself abortions. It will more likely increase death by domestic violence of unwanted children.

I remember, do you?

13. There's a group of Oglala on Pine Ridge who;ve tried to oust Cecelia
Fire Thunder from the get-go. A small minority egged on by the likes of Russel Means.

They keep charging that she acts without council approval.

16. They are sovereign.
Maybe a new tribal council is due if the women decide they don't like the ruling.

19. If I understand much at all about Lakota women
(which is an open question, notwithstanding that I was married to one)

that this is not the final word on the issue on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation any more than Governor Rounds' signature on the South Dakota abortion bill was the final word on South Dakota abortion law.
