Terrorism, Inc. (Al Qaeda Franchises Brand of Violence…)
Al Qaeda Franchises Brand of Violence to Groups Across World

Leaders of the al Qaeda terrorist network have franchised their organization's brand of synchronized, devastating violence to homegrown terrorist groups across the world , posing a formidable new challenge to counterterrorism forces, according to intelligence analysts and experts in the United States, Europe and the Arab world.

The recent attacks in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Chechnya and Iraq show that the smaller organizations, most of whose leaders were trained in al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, have fanned out, imbued with radical ideology and the means to create or revitalize local terrorist groups. They also are expanding the horizons of groups that had focused on regional issues.

With most of its senior leadership killed or captured and its financial structure under increasing scrutiny, Osama bin Laden's network, now run largely by midlevel operatives, relies increasingly on these groups to carry out the jihad, or holy war, against the United States and its allies. Al Qaeda has turned to inspiring and instigating such attacks.

1. I have some news for the Post...
...Al Qaeda NEVER needed large amounts of funding to operate in the first place. They live off the land where they are nearly undetectable and indistinguishable from the local populations.

They have ALWAYS operated in an autonomous fashion, well before the Soviet-Afghan War.

And the idea that they had irreplaceable leaders was pure NeoCon bunk. Since each group operates in an autonomous fashion, each group has their own set of leaders and operation plans.

That's why the events of 9/11 have always puzzled me. That degree of planning and sophistication hints at assistance from an organization much more adept at handling large-scale ops. JMHO.

2. Why can't our leaders in the west-world simply admit...
that Al-Quaida is supported by millions of people, and is seen as a kind of liberation-armee by them. It's not about a bunch of mislead stupid idiots, seduced by a super-rich super-brain called Osama-Bin-Ladden: Al Quaida is not the CIA:-)
The RAF here in Germany was always presented to us via the media in the same manner used now for Al-Quaida. If you look back at it now, with most facts being published, you just can't stop laughing about how stupid they were. And how our police and secret service was even more stupid then. There seems to be a kind of secret contract between the police-forces and the terrorists: We present you as hardcore super-brains, and you make them believe, we are a kind of super-intelligent-police in control of it all.
Hello from Germany,
Dirk

3. Yes
it's a long way from rubber dinghys bumping into ships, and a bomb in the back of a truck driven to an embassy, to grand movie style spectaculars in NY and DC isn't it?

I don't buy it either.
