Hare selected to replace Evans in Illinios 17 |
|
First a little background. Lane Evans has been a Representative from Illinois' 17th District, a strangely set up District, which spans the Mississippi River from Quad-Cities, Illinois to near St. Louis. Evans has represented the district well since 1982 or '83 and recently announced his resignation from Congress due to failing health. He has Parkinson's Disease. There were numerous candidates who were vying to replace him and the committee chairs voted on replacement candidates. Today, Phil Hare was declared as Evans' replacement. Hare is a long time Evans aide who has never held office. From the Quad City Times- Early in the Tueday afternoon counting of ballots in the race to replace Lane Evans as 17th District Congressman, longtime Evans aide Phil Hare had almost a 3-to-1 margin over Sen. John Sullivan, a Democratic legislator from the western Illinois town of Rushville. With only a few votes left to count, Democrats were declaring Hare the winnner by about 16,000 votes to Sullivan's 7000 votes. Complete article at www.qctimes.net. I realize that people outside this area may not care about this race, but it is signifigant in that this Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois will be seating two new people in Congress next session. Hopefully, both will be Democrats and hopefully, they both will be as good as Evans, who will be missed. No less than John Kerry praised Evans from the Senate floor when Evans announced his retirement. Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please feel free to move.

2. Please change the subject line to read: |
|
Hare will face Zinga in the fall
You can put in parentheses more info.
LBN rules state that the subject line must match exactly. This helps readers and also cuts down duplicates.
Thanks, OKNancy LBN Moderator
