Stephens Media Group buys five Arkansas newspapers
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Stephens Media Group has announced the purchase of five central Arkansas newspapers from Magie Enterprises, a family-owned publishing company that has been operating for more than 50 years.

The newspapers are the weekly Cabot Star-Herald, Carlisle Independent, Lonoke Democrat and Sherwood Voice, plus the twice-weekly Jacksonville Patriot.

Also included in the sale is the Weekend Edition, a total-market-coverage publication.

Financial terms of the sale, announced Tuesday and Wednesday in Cabot, Ark., weren't disclosed.

1. once again we're seeing every rightwing magnet
with pocket full of dollars buying a media outlet. We need to put our focus in the media ownership, if we want to make change in this country.

2. Think that means they'll own all newspapers in Arkansas except
the Fascist Gazette.

Stephens Media Group is betting on a need for news. The diversified media company is the publisher of the "Las Vegas Review-Journal," as well as more than 30 other newspapers in eight states (primarily Arkansas). It also operates two news bureaus in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Washington, DC. The company is turning its focus to the Internet through its interactive unit, which operates online sites for its newspapers, as well as portal sites such as LasVegas.com, Hawaii.com, and CasinoGaming.com. Founded by the late Donald Reynolds in 1940, Stephens Media Group is owned by the Stephens Group, an Arkansas-based investment firm. Formerly called Donrey Media Group, the company took on its new name in 2002.
