WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives have reached an agreement to outlaw most Internet spam and could vote on the much-delayed measure within hours, lawmakers and staffers said on Friday.

Speaking at a news conference, Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin, a Republican, and Rep. John Dingell, the committee's top Democrat, said they had agreed on a common approach to fight unsolicited bulk e-mail after months of negotiations.

"We have an agreement. It will be moving forward," Dingell said.

A Tauzin spokesman declined to elaborate on the agreement but said the measure could be called up for a vote soon.
