Retired Farmer Plans Hitler Memorial
June 14, 2006

MILLARD, Wis. -- A retired farmer who says he served in a branch of a German paramilitary unit in World War II is turning some of his property into a memorial to Adolf Hitler.

Ted Junker, 87, plans a grand opening June 25 and says his goal is to clear up what he says are inaccuracies about the war and Hitler's role in it.

"I like the U.S.," he said. "I can't understand why people don't know the truth. This is for understanding, not hate."

Junker said the memorial is in a concrete structure in the side of a hill and has a German flag and other items for display.

Kathy Heilbronner, assistant director of the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations, described Junker as a classic Holocaust denier. She said he chooses to ignore the ample evidence of the Holocaust.

Wisconsin had dozens of POW camps that held over 20,000 Axis POWs during WWII. Some of them "stayed".

Then there is the legacy of the PAPERCLIP Nazis (and even more) to consider, and never forget.

13. I've found one of the inaccuracies!
It is in the article:

Junker said he volunteered to join the German Waffen-SS in 1940. The Waffen-SS was the fighting branch of the Nazi party's dreaded paramilitary unit, the Schutzstaffel. Commonly known as the SS, the unit acted as a special police force and was involved in some of the worst crimes committed in territory under Nazi control during World War II.

Paramilitary unit? Horse-hockey. There was nothing "para-" about it, the Waffen-SS was the fourth part of the German armed forces in the war. 1940 . . . I don't think the Germans were in Romania yet; this clown must have been in overdrive to wear the asphalt costume. Junkers had a case of stiff right arm back then and never had it cured. Sugar Creek is right to look with disgust and horror on his "display".

There are other inaccuracies in that paragraph, but the one serves to illustrate the quality at hand.

19. There were half a million Nazis in October 1940 in Romania.
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 02:22 PM by nealmhughes
They foramlly declared for the Axis in November 1940. Carol was forced out in 41 and Michael took puppet power then, but under the control of the Nazis and Iron Guard. He managed to pull off a coup against them in 1944, but Russia was still pissy against the massive aid given the Nazis in their invasion of the Soviet Union for some odd reason and still acted as if they were at war with Romania after they had retreated from the Soviet Union.
Evidently Romania valued control of all of Transylvania over anything else, and once Hitler and Mussolini had Transylvania divided between Hungary and Romania (Romania had taken it as a war prize following the First World War, where they had invaded Hungary, then were attacked by a joint Austro-Hungarian/German army and nearly all of the country fell into Central Power control. Romania wanted revanche and they got it after Bela Kun established the Communist government in Budapest, occupying Budapest and taking Trnasylvania. To make matters worse, Romania had taken a big chunk of southern Bulgaria (Dobruja) on the Black Sea after a Balkan War...Hitler gave it back to Bulgaria... Really, Romania has been pretty f.u. for a long time as regards alliances, anti-Magyar feeling, antisemitism and anti-Roma.
They do possess remarkable natural resources and cultural history. Too bad someone else has until recently decided what was "best" for the Romanian people -- that is to say the people of all of Romania, not just Romanian speaking Orthodox.
As regards the Nazi: I'd bet there are still some 80 year old vets who are spry enough to do to him what the Waffen SS did to Jews and Roma and Russians and Ukranians.

34. Couple of comments
My "Germans in Romania in 1940" comment was poorly put. I meant "German armed forces". Even then, I'm not sure when the first German units entered Romania; obviously, they were there by June 1941.

Yes, there was a substantial population of German heritage in Romania in 1940 in the Siebenbürgen, etc.

The forced conversion of the Romanians by the USSR is an interesting sidebar of the war.

... while the figures will never be exactly known, I believe the six million figure refers solely to Jews. The Nazis are also believed responsible for the murder of some five million others such as Gypsies and Slavs.

As far as deporting Junkers, that is a good point. At the very least, his WWII record in the SS should be painstakingly researched for any whiff of war crimes activity.
