Porn In The U.S.A.
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 08:12 PM by dArKeR
You won't read phrases like "adult entertainment" in their annual reports, but American companies like General Motors and the Marriott Corporation have been profiting from the distribution of pornography to a hungry American public that snaps it up to the tune of $10 billion a year.

This and other surprising facts are revealed in a double-length segment on the pornography industry reported by Steve Kroft on 60 Minutes, Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

If it weren’t for the pay-per-view adult content offered on satellite television provider and General Motors subsidiary DirecTV, the company would lose money, according to entertainment industry analyst Dennis McAlpine.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/21/60minutes/main585049.shtml

This report's teaser said, 'And who's using it' but in fact this written report did NOT address it.

I stick to my opinion from personal experiences of my girlfriends from around the world and the US and other girl friends close enough to talk to this about, (women are just as much or MORE interested in watching sex in all it's forms as men are.)

I reject the 'dirty' label American Christians have put on sexual relationships. Ever been to farm? We, from the beginning of human time,

homo erectus,
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/tryit/evolution/#

have been watching reproduction in other species and our own species. In 80% of the world's modern population which has a one room hut, clay brick house... sexual relations are seen by all who live in the home. I've seen this first hand in many countries.

In my opinion, the only dirty sick people around are the Falwell, Robertson, Bush, Moral Majority Christian types.

As you travel around the world you will also notice that nudity is a normal aspect of life. All of us evolved nude. Parts of the world still feels nothing, reacts in no way when seeing a woman's breasts because no women wear any covering. It wasn't until the Christian missionaries showed up and told them that they were 'dirty pornographic pigs' did the people start to cover themselves and feel ashamed.

So, in fact, did the Christians Missionaring create the sin of of sex and all the sexual crimes we see today?

7. An applicable Nietzche quote…
The compassionate Christian.-- The reverse side of Christian compassion for the suffering of one's neighbor is a profound suspicion of all the joy of one's neighbor, of his joy in all that he wants to do and can.

5. Ever hear of the Skoptzi?
These people were the ultimate expression of the Christian "sex=evil" analogy. They were a Christian cult in Russian in the late 19th and early 20th century. "Skopets" means "castrated" in Russian. The Skoptzi castrated their male adherents in an effort to purge them of evil, so that they could become more divine. They'd use anything at hand to do this - scissors, broken bottle, rusty straight razor, etc. Often it was done to young men before entering adolescence, but they also did it to grown men who joined them. Interestingly, the operation would be done by a woman.
The lack of testosterone resulted in telltale physique - narrow shoulders, etc. - and other characteristics. There are pictures extant.
They were gaining in popularity at an alarming pace in Czarist Russia, and it took a determined effort to stamp them out. Even at that, they popped up again and hung around for quite a long while post-Revolution.

19. Or the Khlysti
Another Russian underground religious sect of the time, who took the opposite approach, i.e. that you had to wallow in sin and debauchery in order to experience the extreme suffering of sinfulness, which would then lead to profound repentance and the "great purification of the soul that brings that person closer to God" (Edvard Radzinski). Rasputin was allegedly a Khlyst.

8. Oh because 'fundies' are against it, we should be in favor?
There is something kinda pathetic about porn and any obsessive onanism is not particularly healthy...
Personally, I don't think it is much fun watching some other guy have fun...
Big difference between a healthy relationship with ones' sexuality and it being 'sold' as a commodity

I have a "one penis per fantasy" limit.

And sometimes I prefer no penises at all but just watch the women go at it. :)

12. I don't think
..women are as into porn as men, based on my experiences. At least not in terms of the amount of time spent looking at it or talking about it or downloading it.

I have to admit, I do sort of judge guys who are really obsessed with porn as total losers who must have some kind of social disorder or hate women, but otherwise I say live and let live.

I'd say more women than men that I know have diffuculty getting interested in porn because the women often don't look like they are having fun. I would never pay for porn since I know the ones who profit are old white men, while these young women make a pittance (with few exceptions) to have their bodies ravaged and usually lead very difficult lives.

are actually more turned on by it than men, but they seek it out less, and they obsess on it less.

And they're probably more particular about it. But when it does turn them on, look out.

21. When there is no sin, the Christian Extremist is compelled
to invent it. Thus the hysteria about Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street being gay. Thus the hysteria about Tinky Winky of the Teletubbies being gay (though I get the sense Falwell himself doesn't belief half the crap he spouts but gives vent to it to energize the checkbooks). Thus the moral imperative on John Ashcroft to cover the boobs of female statues lest sin be roused, because we all know the male of the species can't look at a marble statue without foaming at the mouth from the sudden need to stick his li'l "rod of iron" in something (that's a Biblical allusion, BTW) -- at least good Christian men can't, apparently. There's a definite item for the psychologists here.

(I'm not talking about real Christians, of course, but about extremists and hypocrites.)

Thus all the strictures and confinements placed on women, because our bodies are inherently sinful. Yep. If they weren't, why else would men be urged to the sin of lust when they see us naked? That's the argument.

I once heard that one of the early Christian fathers (I forget which one) urged that women not be allowed to bathe, because they would then see themselves naked and that would lead them to sin. I kid you not. Lucky me, I'm gonna be getting in the shower tomorrow morning.

24. it's a dynamic
what the fundies miss is the inevitable biological truth - sex is good for you. Sex with multiple people in your lifetime is good for you, you are wiser for experiencing some notion of the breadth of humanity that cannot easily come from a single partner. Sex is as much a issue of connecting as it is reproduction - no notion of sex purely as generational can ever be truly human. We don't work that way.

On the other hand, when looked at from inside an individual's head, sex can be fearful. Think of all the people in the world you would not want to sleep with - they all lust, some perhaps after you. Think of all the people you'd love to sleep with, they all lust too and perhaps not after you. We compete for love, many would like to not have their lives be a constant thumbs up or thumbs down - you don't always want to seduce to have sex. People can get hurt, forced into situations, or abandoned.

Fear causes the restrictions, and much of the fear of sex is very real, not just shortcomings of some founding fathers. But the truth of our lusty natures always makes these restrictions seem absurd, like clothes on a racehorse. People being themselves means people communicating about sex - being against pornography in society necessarily means being pro censorship. When people start talking about censorship, I remind them how them far you would have to go to restrict sexual images - pick up a simple spoon and remember it's a word for a sexual position. Sheesh, we talk about it as doing "it" - look for sexuality and you will find "it" everywhere. Ban it you will have to ban almost everything.

The women exploitation issue is an urban myth. Not that it never happens and not that when it happens it isn't a problem, but the overwhelming numbers of models see it as easy money. And not buying pornography because the money is made by old white guys, by that criteria you wouldn't buy much of anything.
