Religious Leaders Start Political Group to Oppose Bush
Religious Leaders Start Political Group to Oppose Bush
By Sharon Theimer Associated Press Writer
Published: Nov 22, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) - Mixing preaching with politics, several liberal and moderate religious leaders have started a political group to oppose President Bush's re-election and policies.

The Clergy Leadership Network will help churches, temples and mosques develop voter registration programs, run its own get-out-the-vote drives and, if it has enough money, air issue ads, said the Rev. Albert Pennybacker, the group's president and chief executive. He is former president of the Interfaith Alliance.

The group, which includes Jews, Muslims and Christians, will counter the conservative voice of Christian groups such as the Christian Coalition, said Pennybacker, who belongs to the Disciples of Christ, a Protestant denomination.

Network leaders stop short of saying they want a Democrat in the White House after next year's elections, but make it clear they want a change in leadership, including the president and the Republican-controlled Congress. (snip/...)

3. Excellent!
I have been hoping they would do this for a long time! They have given religion such a terrible reputation and set sincere people up for an unfair challenge to their beliefs.
I say this because I am an atheist and my bias against the RR has become almost overwhelming. They present such horror that I catch myself having this instant repulsion to any form of religion and have to remind myself that the bad guys are in the minority.

5. Hallelujah!
Gods be praised! These religious organizations realize that a Bush Republican is just as much a threat to their liberties and quality of life as they are to everyone else's.

6. Good old "Liberals Like Christ"
Good old "Liberals Like Christ" has been plowing this ground since 1997. We don't get the money and/or support of the big churches because we dare to point out their complicity in the agenda of the rich and the powerful, which makes them part and parcel of the "Religious Right". We don't want anybody's money as we state explicitly on our web site because there is no good cause that can't be corrupted by an abundance of money. One advantage of not having money to worry about is the freedom to BE POLITICAL without having to fear loosing "tax exemption" which we don't need in the first place.

I had breakfast with Jesse Jackson, however, yesterday and hope that he will see fit to support us, as has Alan Colmes in his new book, "Red,White and Liberal", in which he includes a chapter inspired by "Liberals Like Christ" called "Jesus was a Liberal".

See why Christians who are serious about following Christ
ought to be Liberal Democrats.

8. YES YES YES

The left must pick up this gauntlet.

Religion, Christianity has NOTHING to do with the Right-Wing Conservative movement. They only advance their version of "morality" to propgandize to the people they are "better" than the Democrats.

Religion and Christianity has long, deep roots in left-wing politics. The Christian Democrats in Europe in the early part of the 1900s prove this.

Me personally? I am a Christian, a strong advcocate, but have complete respect for every other religion in the world (or if you choose not to follow one), don't believe gay people are ruining the world, believe they are born like that and they are still people and Jesus would never hate them, so I'll be damned if I would.

And I certainly don't believe in wanton greed and selfishness that so much defines the Right.

Opposition voices in religion are terribly needed, because I believe there are many people of faith who would be compelled by a strong progressive message.
