Hong Kong vote poses threat to Beijing
Local pro-China party set for rough ride as support for Tung falls
2003-11-22 / Associated Press /

Local elections in Hong Kong have never drawn much attention, but in a political climate charged by massive anger at the government, a vote tomorrow could spell trouble for Hong Kong's top pro-Beijing party.

Hong Kong residents will vote to fill 326 contested seats on 18 District Councils - which are supposed to grapple with local issues like garbage collection and building maintenance. One candidate spent several minutes on television Thursday talking about pigeon waste.

But the territory's biggest pro-Beijing party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, or DAB, fears it could get caught up in a backlash of public discontent over Hong Kong's leader, Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.
