Friedman, Strayhorn Get on Texas Ballot

By KELLEY SHANNON
The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas -- Maverick gubernatorial candidates Kinky Friedman and Carole Keeton Strayhorn learned Thursday that they had each collected enough valid voter signatures to make it onto the November ballot.

The announcement by Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams sets up a crowded race for the fall election among the two independents, Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Democrat Chris Bell.

Strayhorn, the state comptroller who bills herself as "one tough grandma," is the mother of former Bush administration press secretary Scott McClellan.

1. I hope Kinky gets elected! I realize he's a bit of a nut,
but every time I've heard him in an interview, he sounded a whole lot saner than "W" or Perry! Besides, a TX Gov. is more of a figure than a head of State. I can just see Shrub and his whole family freaking out over that!!!!

3. Kinky says what he means and means what he says...
The look on the faces of Repubes if he won would be well worth it and I don't think Kinky can do any worse than the last couple of Texas Governors. Besides, Kinky rescues animals and that is all good in my book!!!

7. F-THAT!
Excuse me? I live in Texas. Don't screw with my dream of seeing the return of a Democratic governor again. :)

I've met Dem candidate Chris Bell on several occasions. He ran for Mayor of Houston once and (IIRC) Governor once before as well. He is well liked, well respected, and has a Progressive agenda.

Kinky is good comic relief, but holds more Right-wing positions than Left: Prayer in schools, anti flag-burning amedment and pro Great Wall of Mexico on the border.

Strayhorn is (of course) a Republican only running as an Indy because Governor Good-Hair locked up the (R) nomination.

I'm praying that the two of them (Kinky and Carole) split the (R) vote and not the "anti-Perry" vote come November and sweap Chris in.

Bite your tongue for hoping for Kinky! This is DU! :o

9. I lived in Texas when Ann Richards was Governor. I moved shortly
after Shrub was elected! He made a mess out of that State, the same as he's making a mess out of the Country. I'd like to see a Dem Gov. of Texas too, but I really don't think Kinky would be that bad!

I don't wish any bad things for your State or you, but I can close my eyes and just dream of how the Pubs would respond if Kinky were to win! I can't help but dream!!!

One of the coldest people you could ever meet.

Do not let his fake persona fool you.

He is screwing up everything regarding Democratic hopes in Texas and he knows it.

I have known the sorry fucker since 1970-something.

5. I saw my first Strayhorn bumper sticker today
The only other bumper stickers have been for Kinky. Not a one for good hair perry or Chris Bell. It would really be ironic if the race ended up between these two.

It's a 5-way race for governor
Strayhorn and Friedman each get enough signatures to take on Perry, Bell and Werner

AUSTIN - It's official. Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn and satirical musician-author Kinky Friedman will be on the November ballot in a five-way race for governor, the state's chief elections official said Thursday.

"Let the race begin," Strayhorn said after Secretary of State Roger Williams' announcement that she and Friedman had submitted far more than the 45,540 valid signatures that each needed to secure ballot spots as independent challengers to Gov. Rick Perry.
(snip)

Former Houston congressman Chris Bell is the Democratic nominee for governor, and Libertarian James Werner also will be on the ballot.

With four high-profile candidates in the race, the winner likely will be decided by a plurality, rather than a majority, of votes. The last time that happened was in 1990, when Democrat Ann Richards defeated Republican Clayton Williams with less than half of the vote, thanks to a third candidate, Libertarian Jeff Daiell.
