Iraqi Shi'ite Leader Survives Baghdad Attack- Son

<snip>TEHRAN (Reuters) - Attackers fired a rocket at a Baghdad mosque in an apparent attempt to kill Iraqi Shi'ite leader and Governing Council member Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, his son said Saturday.

Mohsen al-Hakim said the attackers fired a Russian-made rocket from gardens near the mosque Friday but it failed to explode. The missile missed its target and wrecked a car parked 100 meters (330 ft) away. No one was injured.

Abdul Aziz al-Hakim succeeded his brother Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim as leader of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (news - web sites) (SCIRI) after he was killed in a bomb attack in the holy city of Najaf in August.

Mohsen al-Hakim blamed Friday's attack on supporters of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

"It was a terrorist attack on his life by remains of Saddam's regime and those who want instability in Iraq. They are pursuing the same goals as those who killed Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim," he told Reuters in Tehran.
