Democrats say Mo. to be 'blue state again'
Democrats say Mo. to be 'blue state again'
Sunday, June 25, 2006
SCOTT MOYERS ~ Southeast Missourian

More than 400 gathered to hear party leaders give fiery speeches.
DEXTER, Mo. -- Former state senator Jerry Howard summed up the sentiment Saturday night: "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore."

More than 400 Bootheel Democrats gathered at the Dexter Elks Lodge to hear party leaders give fiery speeches, all sharing one common goal -- wresting power from the Republicans in Washington, D.C., and in Jefferson City.

"We're going to make Missouri a blue state again," Howard said. "Let this rally be the start of that."

The rally -- the first of its kind in Southeast Missouri since 1983 -- was attended by a who's who of Missouri Democrats, including former governor Roger Wilson and former secretary of state Bekki Cook of Cape Girardeau. Also there were those who are seeking office in upcoming elections, including state attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon, U.S. Senate candidate Claire McCaskill and Victoria Hambacker, who is running for U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson's seat in November.

There was one Republican presence, however: A tractor-trailer was parked outside with a banner that read "Support our troops, vote Republican" and "Claire McCaskill supports amnesty for illegals," a claim that McCaskill said was "a lie."

1. Return the state to sanity and if that takes being blue, well that's ...
alright, too.

2. Although I am glad, I also wish the Democrats would stop
making "pronouncements" about their November victories..

There is something infinitely more graceful and intelligent about waiitikng until you have won, to congratulate yourselves..

We do have a big obstacle to overcome, since we can no longer trust in the authenticity of our electoral system, and not many elected officials seem to have cared much about that little fly in the ointment since 2000.

I hope things work out well for us in the fall, but I am not getting out the confetti and noisemakers just yet

3. Yeah, but in this case it's pretty easy to predict
Considering how badly our govenor, the Boy Blunder(Matt Blunt, son of Roy) has fucked up this state. His actions alone have pissed off people left, right and center. I live in deep red Callaway County(hey, it rejoined the Union ten years ago), and none of the people I talk with here are voting Republican this fall, and deeply regret their past Republican votes.

I fully expect to see McCaskill win over Talent, and a huge rollover in the state legislature in order to hamstring the Boy Blunder. His days are numbered, until Jan '09 to be exact, and I imagine that we'll once again be solid blue in '08. Hell, I'd be willing to say that even old Kit Bond will have his alcoholic ass knocked out of the Senate if a decent candidate is put up.

4. Bond's problem has been getting more obvious each year.
He's really disintegrating. Of course it's easy to recall they kept Strom Thurmond there until he was 100, I think, just to occupy his seat for the Republicans.

It would help so much if the polls started showing such a huge advantage for Claire McCaskill that it will be too hard to pull off a Diebold win for her at election time.

18. Hey there. You're almost a neighbor!
I'm in Audrain County -- Kit Bond's home... I'm lucky enough to be on the eastern edge of the county; there's quite a few dems here, altho the fundies seem to scream louder.

OT - If you're waiting for Al Gore's movie to show in MO somewhere besides StLo or KC, it'll be in Columbia at the RagTag Cinema starting July 5.

24. Hi neighbors!!!! I grew up in Mexico, and ran for county office once!
Hope you get Missouri back into our column. My mother still lives in Mexico and is a former Audrain County office holder.

5. It's good to read about Democrats gathering in Missouri to paint the
state blue this November.

I wish them unimpeded success.

Not sure what to do yet about that guy on the tractor...

8. It might be a little harder to turn up here in this corner
I hope we can turn it blue, but, I have my doubts up here. We've got too damn many lemmings who'll follow the party line and the big farmers, even if it's not in their best interests.
I've watched it happen time and again, this time around maybe these guys will wise up as to just who it is ramming it up their bums.

9. Me too. I don't see it happening any time soon.
And i live in KC, Mo.

Lots of people are unhappy but I just don't see them voting Democrat in their lifetimes. It is simply a matter of stubborn pride and refusal to damit that they were wrong.

10. One more registered voter this week
Took my just turned 18 year old niece to register at the St. Louis County Board of Elections. She lives with solidly Republican Parents, but seems to be an avid Democrat just hating *. So we will see. She will vote in the August primary and absentee (away at school) in November. She's young and still getting up to speed on things so I explained how important this November will be in perhaps taking back at least part of Congress. Ya never know how things work out, just asked to be a bit more involved than taking the sound bites from any candidate at face value.

20. Right in Rush's back yard
Dexter is going blue! That's great news.

Surprised the SE Missourian is running this. Doesn't the Limbaugh family own just about every media outlet in Cape Girardeau? If Missouri goes blue, will Cape Girardeau get rid of that hideous mural of the vulgar pigboy?
