Dean says Democrats won't politicize immigration for votes
(AP) The head of the Democratic Party told the nation's oldest Hispanic rights group on Wednesday that Democrats will not use immigration to divide the country and win in the upcoming midterm elections.

"Immigrant bashing and scapegoating is wrong in order to win elections and we're not going to do it," Howard Dean said at the League of United Latin American Citizens convention in Milwaukee.

The Democratic National Committee chairman said Republicans have been in control of Congress and the White House for years and could have done something about immigration and border security, but they were waiting for the approaching elections.

"This was going to be the group that they were going to point to to win the election," he said.

He added sarcastically: "Point a finger, talk about a problem but for God's sake don't solve it. That's how you win elections."..........

"We will do better than they will," Dean said of Republicans. "If you give us a chance, we will do better."

More than 10,000 people were expected at this week's convention, which wraps up Saturday. The week's programs include sessions on immigration, health care and business. On Friday, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and the Rev. Jesse Jackson are scheduled to address the group.

2. Great. Too bad they don't do the same with religion.
I don't want to win because we abandoned minorities.

4. And what exactly are the Dems going to do?
That's the big question!

If you are going to support open borders and amnesty...you might as well vote for the GOP because that's their plan.

7. Immigration is an issue that should ...
NOT be politicized. It is neither a Democratic or Republican issue; it is an American issue.

8. Amen
You're right on target with that. Illegal immigration hurts all but the wealthiest Americans, regardless of whether they're Republicans, Democrats, or any other party affiliation.

The increase in supply of labor decreases wages through supply & demand dynamics. Labor economist George Borjas estimates that immigration suppressed median American wages 4%/year, or $1700/year, from 1980 to 2000. This results in $242 billion less in aggregate labor income per year, reducing potential consumer spending by the same amount, and reducing the dollar-value of production demand by the same amount. This shrinks the economy, because it shrinks the consumer spending and production demand that drives our economy. This causes a direct loss of almost 2% annually of our $12.5 trillion GDP, through reduction in consumer spending.

Reducing labor costs through wage reduction does not "grow" our economy. It shrinks it, because it reduces the wages that finance consumer spending. Economists generally agree that consumer spending is 2/3 of all economic activity.

The economy needs balance between the "means of production" & "means of consumption."
