Ad for Nelson features kind words from Bush

If you need proof that Nebraska is a red state, check out the Nebraska Democratic Party's latest media blitz.
The Democrats began airing a statewide commercial Tuesday that highlights kind words that Republican President Bush had last year for U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, the state's top elected Democrat.
The advertisements are a response to an ad campaign by Nelson's opponent, Republican Pete Ricketts, that seeks to link Nelson with such controversial Democrats as Sens. Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton.
Ricketts, a political newcomer who won the GOP Senate nomination in May, hopes to unseat Nelson in November.
The race is quickly shaping up as one of the most expensive in Nebraska history, and it seems likely to top the $7 million spent in the 1988 Senate general election campaign by Democrat Bob Kerrey and Republican David Karnes.
Ricketts pumped another $725,000 of his own money into the campaign Tuesday, setting the stage for a federal election rule to be triggered that would allow Nelson to raise more money.
Ricketts, a former Ameritrade executive who has estimated his worth at $45 million to $50 million, spent about $5 million of his own funds in the primary.
