Israel threatens strikes on Iranian nuclear targets

ROSS DUNN in JERUSALEM

ISRAEL has warned that it is prepared to take unilateral military action against Iran if the international community fails to stop any development of nuclear weapons at the country’s atomic energy facilities.

As the International Atomic Energy Agency prepares to meet again this week to discuss the situation in Iran, Israel has told Washington it is prepared to act alone and launch a strike similar to its attack on Iraq in 1981 when its air force bombed a nuclear reactor near Baghdad.

In an apparent attempt to increase pressure on the IAEA and United Nations to limit the development of Iran’s nuclear facilities, Israel’s defence minister Shaul Mofaz has made what sources have described as a warning of "unprecedented severity".

5. Whats so ???
Iran is a fundamentalist terror supporting jihadofascist
regime ...the very ANTITHESIS of a progressive country.

They have made no secret of their hatred of israel and
i'm sure they would threaten to use them if they acquired
them.

22. Well, that answer certainly satisfies my question...
...on a number of different levels.

Do you really believe that Iran has a nuclear weapons program, or do you really believe what the Bushies are telling us?

By the way, where are all the Iraqi WMDs?

26. Me too.
"Do you really believe that Iran has a nuclear weapons program, or do you really believe what the Bushies are telling us?"

I think there are a number of strongly suspicious indicators
that they they are developing nukes.

AND I BELIEVE NOTHING SHRUB SAYS !!

"By the way, where are all the Iraqi WMDs?"

Like I said, I believe NOTHING shrub says...

Iran parades new missiles daubed with threats to wipe Israel off map

http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1047804,00.html

Iran yesterday defiantly showed off six of its new ballistic missiles daubed with anti-US and anti-Israel slogans in a move sure to reinforce international concern over the nature of its nuclear programme.
At the climax of a military parade marking the outbreak of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, the enormous Shehab-3 missiles were rolled out painted with the messages, "We will crush America under our feet' and "Israel must be wiped off the map."

Iran later announced that it would scale down cooperation with the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency. Ali Akbar Salehim, Tehran's envoy to the IAEA, said on state television that Iran had been allowing the agency more oversight than required under the nuclear nonproliferation treaty "to show our goodwill and transparency."

The IAEA has imposed a strict deadline, saying Iran must prove it has no nuclear weapons programme by October 31. Its governing board has also demanded that Iran suspend uranium enrichment ac tivity and open its doors to unfettered inspections. If Tehran fails to comply, the UN security council could decide to impose sanctions.

The majority of people in the world have made no secret for they're hatred of the Sharon regime, I guess Israel should prepare to attack all nations who have nuclear facilities .

that Israel will cease to exist in 15 years. They have enraged not only the arabs but also most people in the world.

9. Now thats funny...
"Israel beats Europe in seed funding again"

http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/objects/pages/PrintArticleEn.jhtml?itemNo=363753

Israel outperformed all European countries in investments in young technology companies in the third quarter, according to the results of the quarterly Ernst & Young/VentureOne global venture capital survey. Thirteen Israeli start-ups in the seed and first stages raised $85 million in the quarter.

In all of Europe - not including Israel - only $130 million was invested in 52 young technology firms in the same period. Israel also was ahead of all European countries in high tech investments in the second quarter of 2003.

Investments in British high tech firms was second to Israel, with $51 million invested in 14 start-ups.

Investment in new technology firms is considered one of the indicators of the growth and innovation of a country's technological industries. Only the U.S. reported greater investment in new technology start-ups than Israel, according to the survey.

some prediction.

24. Yes...for quite some time. From the Federation of American Scientists...
Nuclear Weapons
<http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/israel/nuke/>

Excerpt:

"In 1986 descriptions and photographs of Israeli nuclear warheads were published in the London Sunday Times of a purported underground bomb factory. The photographs were taken by Mordechai Vanunu, a dismissed Israeli nuclear technician. His information led some experts to conclude that Israel had a stockpile of 100 to 200 nuclear devices at that time.

By the late 1990s the U.S. Intelligence Community estimated that Israel possessed between 75-130 weapons, based on production estimates. The stockpile would certainly include warheads for mobile Jericho-1 and Jericho-2 missiles, as well as bombs for Israeli aircraft, and may include other tactical nuclear weapons of various types."

Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 12:16 PM by drool_n_yank
wouldn't you seriously consider acquiring some nukes to avoid the same fate as the Pals . Really recent polls taken in England showed the majority think that Israel and the US are the largest threat to peace in the world . Israel as a neighbor = hit the dirt and get some nukes quick !

21. there's a standoff going on
seeing as russian sunburn missiles are in iran now, it seems less likely that israel would bomb the bushehr plant.

supposedly the world's most dangerous cruise missiles...go up to mach 3 and as low as 60 feet.

25. The problem is the range from Iran to Israel...
...the SS-N-22 only has a range of 130 kilometers at most, not the 250 kilometers stated by FAS.

That means that the Iranians would have to launch the missile by sea from the Med, or by air once the plane got close enough to Israeli targets. The chances that any Iranian plane could penetrate the airspace between Iran and Israel is pretty remote.

If the missile(s) were carried in some concealed way by a fishing vessel or small merchant ship the chances of hitting Israeli targets from the sea would appear to be better that the air-launched version.

It could be possible to truck such a weapon by land, but the chances of being discovered while crossing Iraq/Syria and/or Turkey/Syria is pretty high.

The best possibility IMHO would be to get the missiles across the Persian Gulf to Saudi Arabia, and then get close enough to fire the weapon at Israeli targets. That would also serve the purpose of disguising Iran's role in the attack, and make Saudi Arabia look very bad.

30. At this point in time thank goodness for Russia.
Maybe they have the ability to affect the balance of power in that region of the mideast. The Bush administration has been a dismal failure in trying to solve the hate going on with Israel and her neighbors. But then hate is Bushco's game.
