Beijing casts cloud on Carlyle's China deal

The Chinese government said Thursday that control of major equipment makers should remain in domestic hands, calling into question a planned takeover by the Carlyle Group of Xugong Group Construction Machinery, the nation's biggest maker of building machinery.

"China encourages restructuring of such companies, on condition that the country has controlling power," the State Council said in a statement. The statement did not name any companies. Dorothy Lee, a spokeswoman for Carlyle in Hong Kong, declined to comment.
