More U.S. troops needed in Iraq - Democrats (Daschle and Biden)
WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 — More U.S. troops are needed in Iraq now to put down an escalating insurgency, the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee said on Sunday.

And the Democratic leader of the U.S. Senate, Tom Daschle, said additional American troops ''ought to be an option on the table.''

''... If we don't see an improvement, that has to be an option,'' Daschle said on NBC's ''Meet the Press.''

Sen. Joseph Biden, a Delaware Democrat, said if more counterinsurgency and special operations forces were deployed, U.S. troops would be able to withdraw from the embattled country more quickly.

1. Gee, that's just what Nixon did in VietRaq.
We got up to 550,000 troops there before we got run out of the country.

2. Indeed we will need tens of thousands more
CIA estimate that there are at least 50,000 freedom fighters in Iraq. According to British experience that 30 occupation forces are needed for each, that comes to 1,500,000. Obviously we do not have so many, but doubling our current force of 130,000 to 260,000 will be required.

3. The wisdom of Daschle and Biden
When you find yourself in a hole, get a bigger shovel and dig faster.

What idiots.

4. Daschle & Biden are Deluding Themselves

This war is lost by the US. The "insurgents" are Iraq citizens.

Bush, Cheney, and Halliburton need to give up their economic claims on Iraq, acknowledge failure, beg the UN to lead a multinational force, agree to let someone else take the lead, and start an orderly withdrawal.

I am sure they are negotiating with the UN-unfortunately they are using US soldiers as expendable pawns while they try to hang on to the lion's share of the contracts.

In the end, if they fail to convince, Bush is going to try to get Saddam Hussein, declare victory, and run away, leaving a mess.

Daschle and Biden need to do the democratic thing--place the issue before the citizens of the US: Should we clean up the mess Bush and Cheney have made by sending in more troops?

Without the wholehearted backing of the people of the US and a clear statement of expected outcomes, sending more troops is disastrous.

Hey, morons! what we're doing isn't working, won't work, and was wrong to begin with. How about trying a new approach? Like getting out of there and repairing the damage we've done so far.
