Wesley Clark tells Minnesota supporters he's a good bet to beat Bush

(EXCERPT) Susan Feyder, Star Tribune

Published November 23, 2003 CLAR23

About 200 supporters of Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark
shrugged off the threat of the season's first snowstorm Saturday
afternoon to hear the retired general tell them he believes he can
beat President Bush in next year's election.

The $100-per-person event at the Thunderbird Hotel in Bloomington was
one of two fundraising appearances for Clark in the Twin Cities area
on Saturday. Later he spoke at a smaller, $1,000-per-person gathering
in St. Paul.

Stepping to the lectern at the Bloomington event to cheers and chants
of "We want Wes," Clark wasted no time in reminding the crowd of the
central message of his campaign: That his extensive military
experience lends authority to his criticism of the way Bush has
handled the war in Iraq.

3. wow... Look at the difference!
2000-200... A man of the people, Dennis, as opposed to Clark, rolling in here for some quick $$$ just like Bush did!

http://news.mpr.org/features/2003/10/15_helmsm_kucinich/

"Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich brought his presidential campaign kick-off tour to Minneapolis on Tuesday night. About 2,000 supporters gathered at Roosevelt High School, one of 12 stops Kucinich scheduled over three days. Kucinich supporters say their candidate is the only presidential contender who truly represents a change from George W. Bush.

Minneapolis Minn. — The candidate Kucinich arrived a little late, but still energetic, even on his tour's seventh stop. Kucinich bills himself as the most unequivocally anti-war candidate among the Democratic contenders

As a congressman representing Ohio, Kucinich voted against the Bush administration resolution for war with Iraq. He says he will not vote for the current administration request for $87 billion to fund the operation. And he says, if elected, he would remove U.S. troops from Iraq immediately

-----------

Some high-profile people also spoke at the rally, including Native American activist and former Green Party vice presidential candidate Winona LaDuke.

LaDuke says Kucinich speaks to many of the issues that Greens and progressives care about, including sustainable energy, peace and justice, poverty, and constitutional rights.

"I am well aware that Dennis is not a Green. But, he is Green in his heart," she said.

Also lending support to the candidate at the rally was Minnesota Sen. John Marty, DFL-Roseville, and Senate Majority Leader John Hottinger who joined in by telephone."

5. Will Minnesota vote for Bush in 2004?
Much as I hate to admit it about my home state, it's a far from foregone conclusion.

Shifting demographics meant Wellstone almost couldn't handle the insipid Coleman - and Mondale definitely couldn't.

Unfortunately, we probably can't produce the kind of votes that once made Minnesota a haven of reason in the Reagan era. The state's liberal tradition is buried today under the quick-fix culture of hate radio and omnipresent SUVs.

Could Clark win Minnesota? Maybe; if he continues lurching toward the right, he might. But what kind of a victory would that be?
