Pipeline blaze in northern Iraq (Monday)
Pipeline blaze in northern Iraq

Monday 24 November 2003, 2:30 Makka Time, 23:30 GMT

An important gas pipeline has been blown up near Iraq’s northern oil centre of Kirkuk, causing a huge fire.

The head of the fire department in the Kirkuk-based North Oil Company, Jumaa Ahmad, said an explosive device caused the blast on Sunday on the pipeline which transports gas from the Jambur oil field to the Baiji refinery, 250km north of Baghdad.

The blaze was so big that its glow could be seen in the night sky from Kirkuk, 30km to the north of Jambur.

The explosion is the latest in a long series of blasts against Iraq's oil infrastructure, blamed by the US-led occupation on loyalists of toppled president Saddam Hussein and resistance fighters.

4. Just call Halliburton!
After all, that's why they were paid...and, the reason they were brought in.

5. Nonesense. The Iraqis Love us. They would never do such a thing
Haven't they heard about the Iraqi-American Female Neo-con Human Rights Lobbyist who is now their Ambassador to the US?

Of course, as Bush's pipelines burn, he'll say they don't appreciate Democracy.

9. I would say that this is probably
the US's biggest concern. I have this funny feeling that troops' deaths and injuries are worrisome, only because they hurt Bush's ratings back home.

The bombing of pipelines hit them below the belt. And also in the pocketbook. It's true that Halliburton does have $$costly$$ contracts to repair the pipeline in the event of sabotage, but it does cost up to $1 million per fix. They can't keep doing that indefinitely.

Also, Halliburton is in the business of selling oil. They want the black gold to be flowing in the pipelines. In a sense, they are much more vulnerable to these kinds of attacks.

A resistance fighter has a bunch of explosives in the trunk of his car. He drives past a few US checkpoints. He whistles and hopes for the best. It's dark now, about 9:00 pm. He drives a ways outside of town, where there are no armed guards and there doesn't seem to be anyone around. He takes his explosives and a delayed timing device which is set to go off about 6 hours from now.

He sets the timer. Hustles as quickly as he can back to the car. Makes a clean getaway and drives back to town. He's in the clear. The next morning, the pipeline is broken and troops and Halliburton specialists scramble to the scene to fix the mess.

This is a much less risky operation for the Iraqis. They don't have to ransom their life, as when they openly shoot at american soldiers in town or plant land mines on the roads for US vehicles to run over.

I believe the oil pipeline is over 900 miles long. There is simply no way the US can patrol every mile of it. We only have 130,000 troops in there. The Iraqis are 22 million.

The math is really against us on this one. We're vulnerable as hell. The locals are sympathetic to these men, and will help them out and look the other way.
