Kansas community requires households to have guns
Kansas community requires households to have guns

GEUDA SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) — Residents of this tiny south-central Kansas community have passed an ordinance requiring most households to have guns and ammunition.

Noncomplying residents would be fined $10 under the ordinance, passed 3-2 earlier this month by City Council members who thought it would help protect the town of 210 people. Those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities, paupers and people who conscientiously oppose firearms would be exempt.

"This ordinance fulfills the duty to protect by allowing each individual householder to provide for his or her protection," said Councilman John Brewer.

"This is simply using the U.S. Constitution — Second Amendment in particular — to the city of Geuda Springs' advantage."

1. technically
under the interpretation they're using of the Second Amendment, the government has to provide the guns. I wonder if they've thought of that?

3. nope....reread the militia act.
individuals were required to provide their own guns and accoutrements. In fact, some state's homestead exemption laws specifically include firearms as exempt from bankruptcy proceedings. The idea was that the guns couldn't be taken to satisfy other debts because they were required for the owner's civic duty.

I suppose there could be some restrictions put on things like calibers of guns, but only if it aided a valid military purpose, like resupply.

2. And how will this be verified?
Will citizens rat out their neighbors who they suspect of being un-gunned? Can the cops get a warrant to search and verify that a household lacks firearms?

What if someone prefers crossbows or katanas to firearms? Do those count? The Constitution says "keep and bear arms", not "keep and bear guns".

Any lawyer worth a dime could poke this statute so full of holes it could be used for a seive.

5. Yes, Kennesaw is right next door to me. I lived there for 5 years.
But the law has never really been enforced.
