Democrats pound GOP campaign ad
Democrats pound GOP campaign ad

They say it questions patriotism of war critics

WASHINGTON (CNN) --Democrats demanded a recall of the Republican Party's first ad of the 2004 presidential campaign Sunday, one calling it a "repulsive and outrageous" attack on the patriotism of anyone who opposes President Bush's wartime policies.

Republicans said the $100,000 ad merely reflects a campaign based in part on the president's leadership since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

But Democrats took particular issue with a line in the ad that says "people are attacking the president for attacking the terrorists."

"I'm not attacking the president because he is attacking terrorists," said retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, a Democratic presidential candidate. "I'm attacking him because he's not attacking terrorists."

Clark said the U.S. invasion of Iraq diverted resources from the pursuit of the al Qaeda terrorist network behind the September 11 attacks.

Clark and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle both called on the Republican National Committee to withdraw the ad. More...

2. As they should, it is disgusting propaganda and...
I am ashamed of McCain for defending the ads. It is clear that they are meant to make people afraid. It is an attempt to silence those that will not except their warmongering. We should write to the television stations in Iowa and NH and demand that they boycott the ads.

"repulsive and outrageous" don't even begin to describe it.

Reprehensible, disgusting, gutter politics, brown-shirt tactic.

5. Tinfoil warning - What if the agenda has nothing to do with *s reselection
and instead has more to do with PNAC and Tommy Franks notion of a "military gov't"?
I remember reading Shrubs comments that basically lead one to believe he really didn't care if he was reselected or not. Can't remember the exact wording.
Some had stated that another attack on US soil would discredit Shrubs "progress" on the war on terror. But put another spin on it, that despite the great effort that has gone into the "war on terror" we need to step it up, drastic measures must be taking, a military state must be "temporarily" inacted to erradicate the US and the world of this EVIL. The UK has recently set the possibility in motion.

Just a thought. :scared: :tinfoilhat:

7. We need an ad
that shows the number of dead soldiers stating that "they are fighting" the war on terrorism while * refused to go to vietnam and went AWOL. The number of dead at the WTC and something saying that * is blocking the investigation. The clip of his speech of "Osama wanted dead or alive" and then clips of Osama walking around alive from the video clips and then in big letters something like "WHO IS FIGHTING TERRORIST?" or "IS THIS THE KIND OF FIGHT YOU WANT?" or next to the failures a stamp in red that says "FAILURE"better yet they can label in a defeated whisper "Rhetoric, pure Rhetoric" and then fo;;ow with "we need a change of leadership to really fight the war on terrorism"

8. the dems need to respond with their own ads
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 12:22 PM by truthspeaker
They could start off "President Bush says he's defending us from terrorism, but..." and then follow with as many examples of Bush policies making the United States less safe as you can fit in 30 seconds.

Attacking Iraq before Al Qaeda was dealt with, not preparing for the power vacuum in Iraq, not cooperating with the 9/11 investigation, arrogance and insults to foreign countries (remember all that goodwill we had right after 9/11?), failure to act on, or even read, warnings from the Clinton administration about Al Qaeda... etc. etc. You could fill a lot of 30 second ads.

10. Something is definitely off track
when you have a bunch of people who mostly did not risk their lives by serving in the armed forces questioning the patriotism of a bunch of people who mostly did.

Up is down, in is out, stupid is smart.

The perfect response to this ad, from Wesley Clark.

12. Yes its about time.
The sordid assault on Max Cleland appears to have taught the lesson that there is no depth of sleaze to which they will not stoop in smearing Democrats. This is recycled McCarthyism writ large, the old "soft on communism" bullshit of the fifties being rerun for modern audiences.

14. Max Cleland indeed
I think the Dems learned from that campaign. They know there's no way the Repukes will drop those ads, and frankly, they shouldn't. All's fair...and the Repukes have been playing the "Willie Horton" card since '88. By complaining loudly, the Dems are getting some press, and getting the message out about the "message" the GOP is trying to push. Clark's response is classic. I hope it gets picked up by the press as much as the original story has.
