Britain remembers 7/7 victims
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5153678.stm

The UK is paying tribute to the victims of the 7 July London attacks, one year after suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured nearly 800.

Cathedral bells have tolled, flowers have been laid near the blast scenes and at noon the country fell silent for two minutes to remember the victims. The day is culminating in a service of remembrance at London's Regent's Park.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said the anniversary was an opportunity for "the whole nation to come together". He said it was a chance "to offer comfort and support to those who lost loved ones or were injured on that terrible day".

Mr Blair joined emergency service workers in London for the silence, which was observed across the country, including at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

1. So being in the wrong place at the wrong time makes one a HERO?
what about all those soldiers who have been killed in this Iraq misadventure...ANY PLAQUES TO THIER SACRAFICE? No you say...

This tribute to terrorism is getting ABSURD! Do they have memorials at the African Embassies?

There have been HORRIBLE terrorists attacks in Europe forever...do they memorialize ALL terrorists attacks?

5. It's very London-centric...
I'm in the (UK) Midlands and one of my colleagues at work was p*ssed off about the official two minutes silence across the whole country today. He'd lived in a provincial town that had been bombed by the IRA, which hardly received any attention at all.

2. The morning news called the 7/7 attack "England's 9/11"....
Both attacks were dreadful crimes. But, for too many Americans, 9/11 meant--"That stuff shouldn't happen in the USA--we're better than the rest of the world!"

Many Brits remember the IRA. And the Luftwaffe.

4. They handled the attacks much differently as well...

...very little chest-beating, or "why us?!?!?" syndrome. They just got on with their business. I was in London on 7/7 and actually was on the Picadilly Line train heading for Kings Cross but I got off before Russell Square, thankfully. I still have my fare ticket...
