Kucinich complains of media bias
Kucinich complains of media bias
Democratic presidential hopeful says press is marginalizing his campaign
By Carl Chancellor
Beacon Journal staff writer

In the parlance of the hip-hop generation, presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich can't get any love from the media.

The four-term U.S. congressman on several occasions has complained that political reporters have slapped a voter advisory label -- Can't win -- on him and have given his presidential aspirations short shrift. It's a situation that the Lakewood Democrat says is more than vexing: It's downright unfair.

Kucinich's campaign press secretary, David Swanson, said that some members of the national media think it's their responsibility, and not the voters' job, ``to narrow the field.''

He added that the mass media have sought to marginalize Kucinich and belittle his chances.

1. Well, I Agree, But...
...Instead of (or in addition to) complaining about it, why not do something about it? Find ways around the biased media. (They do exist, and some campaigns are getting the job done.)

2. Pretty tough sometimes when its so blatant...check this
The Vice President of MSNBC in charge of promotions, Val Nicholas, told Kucinich for President Campaign Press Secretary David Swanson: "I don't have to be fair. That's not my job. My job is to get eyeballs to the debate. I just called the President of MSNBC and that's what he told me. I do promotions, not content."

But trust me the Kucinich Campaign is definitely reachimg people with or without the media....folks will be surprised....

Peace

4. ooookay
So it's the media's fault that Kucinich polls at 1 or 2% - and not the fact that he's little more than a walking liberal talking point whose never done anything in his life to deserve the presidency.

Ooookay.

6. I have to assume you'd rather a quack get it
Or a (recently) Republican. Or a bunch of guys who voted for the Patriot Act, undermining American civil liberties. Or some senators who authorized Bush's fraudulent war.

After all, the media in this country have proven time and again how much of an asset they are to our political discourse. They're so much smarter than you, they have a right to peddle their bullshit {heavy sarcasm alert}.

10. how about a competant, experienced Democrat

I have nothing against Kucinich personally, but he really has no place being in this race.

You can talk all you want about the issues that he brings up that nobody else does. But if you've seen the debates, you know that all the other candidates ignore him like he's not even there.

It's not because they're afraid to debate him. It's not because he's right and they're wrong.

Its because he's a little congressman nobody knows about who decided to run for president as anti-war and anti-NAFTA.

Well, Dean is anti-war and Gephardt is anti-NAFTA, so why is he in the race if other, more established and viable candidates, have similar positions on the issues?

And where is Kucinich's base of support? Is it even guaranteed that he could win his home state, were he the nominee? Probably not.

Tell me why Kucinich deserves to be taken seriously. I'll listen.

7. Of course they have
The corporate media and those behind it have no intention of allowing someone like Kucinich to get anywhere near the White House.

The idea of a truly populist President caring more about the people than about corporations and wanting to rectify all the excesses brought to us by both Democrats and Republicans is anathema to them.

And the country wonders why we're in such a mess.

9. It is being marginalized. And it's sad.
I really like DK. With his new anti-BBV stance, he's moved to my first choice.

But we all know about media bias. No surprises here, sadly.

11. Only losers blame the media
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 04:19 PM by mobuto
sure the media are lazy, incompetent, cowardly and lemming-like, but it doesn't do any good to attack them. Its just a reality of modern society.

In this case, I think the media are looking for hype. Its hard to hype the guy who's last in the polls. Polls, of course, are driven largely by media coverage, so you have a real emphasis on momentum, but whatever.

15. Wow, I'm amazed. People here are well aware media=whores.
But when someone with balls like Kucinich actually
calls them on it, and points out that their coverage is
slanted to dismiss him, DU'ers attack Kucinich?

16. thank you!
similar happens with "polls" - one day, they have to be rigged; another, the media is spot-on ...

day-in, day-out, as a DK supporter, it's always 'someone else' on this or that show ... 'same person' coming up next on another show ... or 'same person' is on live now on another ... it's true with some other Democrats, as well ... not just DK ...

21. Might as well face it, these days people vote for
the wrong reasons. The electables have to be tall enough, pretty enough, white enough and lovable enough. Throw in sexy enough and they might have a chance.
I recall the aspersions thrown at Harry Truman for his lack of these surface qualities. That was probably the last time in US voting history that a candidate was voted in for ability and proven capability.

22. They are all being "marginalized"..
to some extent orthe other. Dean has no military or foreign policy experience. Kerry is dead in the water. Clark misspeaks all the time. None of them can hold a light to that great leader and intellect, George W Bush...
