9. Change in story...no one died? (Reuters)
Edited on Sat Jul-08-06 09:46 PM by mcscajun
LONDON (Reuters) - A plane with 200 people on board crashed in Russia on Sunday, the Interfax news agency reported, but said no one had been killed.

The agency quoted the Russian Emergencies Ministry as saying that the Airbus A-310 passenger plane on a flight from Moscow to Irkutsk was carrying 192 passengers and eight crew members when it crashed in Irkutsk.

The agency said that the plane crashed during the final approach to Irkutsk, where it overran the runway, hit a concrete fence, crashed into a building and caught fire.

It said no one had died from the crash but that 40 people had been taken to a hospital.

But AP says:

Updated: 10:37 p.m. ET July 8, 2006

MOSCOW - An airplane carrying about 200 people crashed Sunday in the Siberian city of Irkutsk and most on board were feared dead, officials said.

The Sibir Airbus A-390 crashed on landing, veering off the runway and bursting into flames, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.

Andrianova said 43 people had been hospitalized and another 10 managed to escape. Most of the other passengers were feared dead, she said.

The plane carried a crew of eight and 192 passengers, she said.

So who is right here? I refrain from comment until morning, when no doubt this story will have "developed" into facts.

"The aircraft veered off the runway on landing. It was travelling at a terrific speed," Andrianova said.

The plane hit a concrete barrier, collapsing the front section of the aircraft, she said. It then burst into flames.

It took five emergency services more than two hours to extinguish the flames, Andrianova said.

18. I have to fly Siberia Airlines next month
I was thinking the past week how glad I was to not have to fly a Tupelov 154 which has a horrendous crash record, I get to fly a Boeing 737, but this crash is an Airbus, so I guess they crash everything. Arrggghhhh :(
