Guantanamo Probe Finds Evidence of Plot

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — An investigation into three apparent suicides at the
Guantanamo Bay prison has found that other detainees may have helped the men
hang themselves or were planning to kill themselves too.

Authorities who searched other detainees' cells after the three were found hanged
discovered instructions on tying knots, along with several notes in Arabic that were
"relevant" to an investigation of a possible broader plot, officials said in court
papers filed late Friday in Washington.

The detention center's commander, Navy Rear Adm. Harry B. Harris, said in an
affidavit that investigators believe "the suicides may have been part of a larger
plan or pact for more suicides that day or in the immediate future."

Authorities confiscated personal papers from nearly all 450 prisoners at Guantanamo
Bay to "determine whether other suicides were planned or likely to be planned,"
Carol Kisthardt, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent in charge of the
investigation, said in an affidavit.

1. They're blasting this every hour on AP radio news

I though they already had been shamed with their "act of war" non-sequitur. But now we have this nonsense. Amazing. Where do they come up with these loons?

I guess even death is no longer an escape from the "swift boaters."

2. So another round of torture??
The jailers were calling this an "conspiracy" or asymmetrical warfare -- so they merely had to torture or find the "evidence" to support their theory.

Personally I don't believe much coming from the military or this administration. Rummy purged the officers til he got the ones who supported him no matter what.

The military is nearly FUBAR. It is broken.

Torture people endlessly -- with no end in sight -- no relief from the endless cycle of torture -- most sane people would want to kill themselves.

3. This is funny phrasing
"Authorities who searched other detainees' cells after the three were found hanged discovered instructions on tying knots, along with several notes in Arabic that were "relevant" to an investigation of a possible broader plot, officials said in court papers filed late Friday in Washington."

What language were the knot tying instructions in? The phrasing here makes me think the knot instructions were not in Arabic.

"Investigators said they confiscated about 1,100 pounds of personal documents after three detainees were found hanging from their steel mesh cells before dawn on June 10 _ the first reported deaths of prisoners at the prison."

1100 pounds for 200 or so prisoners - that's five pounds each.

U.S. says detainees may have plotted suicides on legal notes
Government wants permission to read papers given to inmates
by their lawyers

By DAMIAN CAVE
New York Times

Detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba may have planned
three suicides there last month by exchanging messages on paper that was
provided by lawyers and generally not scrutinized by guards because
of confidentiality rules, the government has asserted in court papers.

Justice Department lawyers made the claim Friday in a court filing in seeking
permission from a federal district judge to review some 1,100 pounds of papers
seized from the detainees as part of a military investigation into the
June 10 suicides.

4. Question--why do they think this "evidence" will change our minds?
Some of us believe the suicides were caused by the inhumane, unbearable conditions with no end in sight that detainees could no longer tolerate. If there was a "wide conspiracy to commit suicide" why would this help their case? Wouldn't we just believe "that makes sense!" It is so bad there, A LOT of detainees must believe this is their only true way out."
