8 Killed, 41 Hurt in Baghdad Car Bombings

The Associated Press
Monday, July 10, 2006; 4:13 AM

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Two car bombs exploded nearly simultaneously in a Shiite area
of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least eight and wounding dozens, police and
hospital officials said.

The bombings came a day after masked Shiite gunmen ambushed Sunni Arabs in western
Baghdad, a dramatic escalation of sectarian violence that killed 41 people.

First a car parked near a repair shop on the edge of the Shiite slum of Sadr City
blew up. Minutes later, a suicide car bomber drove into the crowd that had gathered
near the site.

Meanwhile, police said they found five unidentified bodies in Suwayrah, 25 miles
south of Baghdad.

15. I agree
Stop the cars from running just like we stopped the electric in many households over there. Soon they will go from a third world country into the dark ages. Maybe Bush & Co can spin it as a way to lower gas prices.

17. I'm Talking About In the Middle of the City
A lot of folks consider that a good idea even in cities
that are not in the midst of a bloody civil war.

Let the deliveries happen during non-market hours.

May not be able to stop people blowing each other up,
but at least they would be limited to what they can
carry.

3. Whatever happened to "Operation Forward Together"?
That was the operation started just last month that was supposed to "recapture Baghdad" and "bring peace to the Iraqi capitol". It looks like it is going just GREAT, with upward to 150 killed and 300 wounded over the weekend, in civil war action! Do the supporters of the Dictator still talk about "victory"? Can they keep a straight face while doing so? Our involvement in Iraq is beyond stupid, beyond evil; it is now flat-out insane. And the Bushists in both political parties still say "stay the course"...stop the world, I want off...

4. Sectarian violence flares up around Baghdad

At least eight killed a day after gunmen slaughter dozens in Sunni district

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two car bombs struck a Shiite district in Baghdad on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens, officials said, as sectarian tensions rose following a rampage by Shiite gunmen killed 41 people, most of them Sunnis.
...

Ayad al-Samaraie, a member of the Iraqi Accordance Front, the largest Sunni bloc in parliament, blamed members of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia for Sunday's killings.

He also called on the U.N. Security Council to send peacekeepers to Iraq, saying Monday that U.S.-led "occupation forces" cannot protect Iraqis.
...

The surge in violence was likely to further enflame Shiite-Sunni tensions and undermine public confidence in Iraq's new unity government. It also raised new questions about the effectiveness of the Iraqi police and army to curb such attacks.

Can there be any doubt that Iraq is lost? Some of our troops are commiting atrocities further spoiling our standing before the world. And the violence continues unabated. This is the result of staying the course. We've got to get our troops out.

14. Corner turning
My vehicle went into the shop the other day & when it came out I had to reset the directional device on it. To do this you need to hit the reset button & turn in circle at least 5 times. This allows it figure out where it is. This is the way this administration is in corner turing, going around in circles. The only thing is my vehicle figured where it was. But they will never figure that one out.

7. Reuters: Maliki appeals for unity, Baghdad hit by blasts
Maliki appeals for unity, Baghdad hit by blasts

Jul 10, 2006 — By Lutfi Abu Oun and Ross Colvin

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki pleaded for Iraqis
to "unite as brothers" on Monday as deadly bomb blasts rocked Baghdad,
a day after 60 people were killed in a dramatic escalation of sectarian
violence in the city.

"Our destiny is to work together in brotherhood to defeat terrorism and
insurgency," he told the Kurdish regional parliament in northern Iraq.
"We have no choice but to defeat those who want to return us to the black
days."

A sharp rise in bloodletting between Shiites and minority Sunni Arabs has
raised new fears of a slide to all-out civil war and dealt a blow to Shiite
Maliki's efforts to encourage Sunnis to end their support for the Sunni-
dominated insurgency.
<snip>
The violence came despite a security crackdown in the capital, raising new
questions about the effectiveness of the police and Iraqi army, which the
United States is slowly building to enable it to begin withdrawing its
127,000 troops.
