Israel puts jet fuel request to US
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 05:04 PM by cal04
THE Pentagon notified Congress overnight of an Israeli request to purchase up to $US210 million in JP-8 aviation jet fuel for its military aircraft.

"The jet fuel will be consumed while the aircraft is in use to keep peace and security in the region," the Pentagon's Defence Security and Cooperation Agency said.

The notice to Congress came two days after Israeli fighter jets attacked targets in Lebanon, including the international airport in Beirut, following the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas.

(snip)
The US Congress has 30 days to act to block the sale; otherwise, it is automatically approved.

19. good idea -- excellent suggestion
war is costly -- and we tax payers will be footing the bill.

Now is the time to tell the children to sit down and negotiate -- pretend to be grown up adults.

Because if we the taxpayers pay for this -- the US is seen as supporting Israel (as if the US doesn't already have this image world wide).

But to say no now would hopefully save lives on BOTH sides -- on ALL sides.

They are our allies. If we can spare it we should give it. Israel is once again defending herself, and is made out to be the bully.

33. Israel has warplanes, their opponents do not
How can you say we should continue funding this very uneven conflict. US funded warplanes are used to fight ground rockets, how uneven can it get?

Probably as uneven as our bombing raids over Iraq.

43. "made out to be the bully"??? WTF!! Is the bully is more like it....
Israel is no friend of the US; at least the part of the U.S. that is not rapture obsessed fundie whackos or war profiteers.

Remember an agent of the Israeli governemnt ran over an american citizen with a bulldozer and the govermment did nothing. Remember the massacres sanctioned by Israel last time they invaded Lebanon. Remember that Israel and the U.S. government proved that they don't give a crap abouty democracy when they attempt to sabotage the results of the Palestinian election.

Well certainly every muslim does. They have a long list of grievances against Israel; many of them valid. What every muslim is also learning every day is that the U.S. war machine in incapable of defending itself in Iraq. That means short of massive bombing they are incapable of defending Israel.

That's why the Israeli blood frenzy this time.

12. I think Halliburton only deals in sailboat fuel
Fraud

Knight Ridders' Seth Bornstein reports on May 21, 2004, that "Empty flatbed trucks crisscrossed Iraq more than 100 times as their drivers and the soldiers who guarded them dodged bullets, bricks and homemade bombs.

"Twelve current and former truckers who regularly made the 300-mile re-supply run from Camp Cedar in southern Iraq to Camp Anaconda near Baghdad told Knight Ridder that they risked their lives driving empty trucks while their employer, a subsidiary of Halliburton Inc., billed the government for hauling what they derisively called 'sailboat fuel'

Allies split with U.S. stance on offensive

Agence France-Presse, The Associated Press

Published: July 14, 2006

PARIS Major U.S. allies on Friday condemned the ferocity of Israel's military attack on Lebanon, revealing a clear split with Washington's moderate call for restraint.

President Jacques Chirac of France, the former colonial power in Lebanon, castigated the Israeli offensive, calling it "totally disproportionate," while leaders from Russia to Spain expressed fears of a widening Middle East conflict that could get out of control....

(clip)

...In one of the strongest condemnations yet from a world leader on the conflict, Chirac asked whether Lebanon's destruction was the ultimate goal. "One could ask if today there is not a sort of will to destroy Lebanon, its equipment, its roads, its communication," he said during an interview to mark Bastille Day, a national holiday in France.

Erkki Tuomioja, foreign minister of Finland, which currently holds the EU presidency, voiced Europeans' fears that the conflict could expand into Syria, which some leaders feel may have had a hand in the crisis. "This is in no way desirable, and the consequences could be truly uncontrollable," Tuomioja said.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia called on all sides to stand down, while the Spanish prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, warned Israel that it was "making a mistake" to attack Lebanon.

13. While going through airport security today, I heard that very thing Rex..
I was at O'hare this morning on my way back to Los Angeles
this morning and waiting while one of the Thousands Standing Around
(TSA) workers put my purse throught the x-ray machine over and over.
Turns out my powder compact was highly suspicious to this moron.
As I waited as he meticulously inspected my make-up, a man standing
nearby was watching and commented on the proceedings.
I responded with my opinion that since the borders were wide
open and with all that had transpired in the ME over the last
few days that I was relieved that the TSA was being so thorough.
I was, of course, being sarcastic.
The onlooker lit up and said, "Well I think they should just
bomb the entire Middle East and be done with it."
I told him oh yes, that makes perfect sense!
Kill millions of innocent civilians!

Disgusted,

29. Robert Fisk's eyewitness account on what Israel is really doing in Lebanon
Robert Fisk: From my home, I saw what the 'war on terror' meant
Published: 14 July 2006

All night I heard the jets, whispering high above the Mediterranean. It lasted for hours, little fireflies that were watching Beirut, waiting for dawn perhaps, because it was then that they descended.

They came first to the little village of Dweir near Nabatiya in southern Lebanon where an Israeli plane dropped a bomb on to the home of a Shia Muslim cleric. He was killed. So was his wife. So were eight of his children. One was decapitated. All they could find of a baby was its head and torso which a young villager brandished in fury in front of the cameras. Then the planes visited another home in Dweir and disposed of a family of seven.

42. Let's assume about three bucks per gallon
That would be about 70 million gallons of jet fuel. A gallon of fuel is about 10 pounds so, that would be about 700 billion pounds.

According to the F-16 fuel consumption rates below, averaging 300 pounds per minute, that would be about 4,000 hours of flying time. Over, say 100 jets, that would be 40 hours per jet.

War is expensive.

44. Your figures are off...
One US gallon of jet fuel weighs approximately 6 pounds (one imperial gallon weighs about 7-7.5 pounds). So 70 million US gallons of jet fuel would be closer to 420 million (not billion) pounds--and when I run the numbers I come up with about 233 hours of flight time per aircraft for an air force of 100 planes, based on a figure of $3/1 US gal). War is expensive, but not THAT expensive.

45. I meant to type million, not billion
And I moved the decimal place one too many in the final calculation, so my original calculation should have been 350 hours, not 35. The better estimate of fuel density that you provided takes it to the 233 you quote. I am glad you checked the math.
