Alioto backs Newsom (Dem) -- Gonzalez (Green) camp cries foul
<snip>

With two weeks left until election day and a new poll showing Matt Gonzalez gaining ground, Gavin Newsom took a risk Monday when he accepted the strings-attached endorsement of longtime antagonist Angela Alioto.

Alioto, an attorney and former supervisor with roots in the city's progressive movement who placed a losing third in the Nov. 4 general election, can give Newsom a boost with voters to his left in the Dec. 9 runoff.

But the move also gave his opponent Gonzalez a chance to ask whether he cut an unethical deal to win her backing.

And some observers said it suggests Newsom's campaign is in trouble.

<snip>

The survey of 400 likely voters conducted over the weekend by David Binder for city business and trade organizations allied with Newsom showed their candidate with a 47-to-39 percent lead over Gonzalez, down from 49 to 35 percent in a poll taken 10 days ago.

Another poll released Nov. 14 by CBS-5 TV put the two candidates in a virtual dead heat.

1. She made a deal with the devil
I'll waste no tears on the fake Democrat Newsome as he goes down December 9th. But it will be really sad to see him bring Alioto, a real Democrat, down with him.

2. I hope it's Gonzalez.
Someone needs to tackle the gentrification and bourgeoisification of SF. We need a true progressive. The (D) does not impress me in this case.

4. is that even legal? much less ethical?
Newsom is a Republican plant and will destroy the Democratic party in the SF Bay Area.

Creating the title of "Vice Mayor"? - what whores these people are!

5. The Democrats will do anything to hang on to their power.
They're even bringing in the big guy (Gore). However, they can count this former Alioto voter in the Gonzalez camp. Does she really think Newsom will keep his promises to her? That's like Kerry believing that W wouldn't abuse his war powers. What world do these people live in?

6. Gonzalez is done
Yesterday he had an interview scheduled on KGO 810 during the morning show. It's the most listened to morning talk show in San Francisco and a fairly friendly forum. Gonzalez blew it off.

Worse, the local ABC affiliate had scheduled a debate two weeks ago. Both Newsome and Gonzalez agreed to the terms of the debate. It was to be taped yesterday (Monday, November 24, 2003) and played on Sunday night. On Sunday, November 23, 2003 the Gonzalez camp called ABC and told them that they didn't like the debate format, which had been agreed to by both sides two weeks prior. ABC refused to change the format at the last minute, so Gonzalez didn't show. Essentially, he gave up on 24 minutes of free air time right before th vote in an election in which he is trailing. Worse (for Gonzalez), Newsome showed up as scheduled. I don't know if ABC will air the "debate" with only Newsome taking and answering questions, but if they do (which they might), blowing off desperately needed air time will go down as an all-time boneheaded political move.

Anyway, I predict that Newsome will win by no less than fifteen points. Maybe a lot more.

7. Here's the real story (and Gonzalez is not done)
Gonzalez is up 7 points in the latest poll, even Newsom's poll only had Newsom up 8 points. This ain't over.

First,regarding Angela Alioto's endorsement:

She said she offered the same deal to Gonzalez, committed to him, then thought about it and offered it to Newsom. Matt Gonzalez says no way. So there you go, she either lied or has no principles or a combination of both. To think I might have voted for her had I been an SF resident!

Also, Gonzalez is pretty steady and popular. Newsome is somewhat of the empty suit in this race. He reminds me of Gray Davis (although I never hated Gray) Gavin just doesn't inspire.

A lot of Democrats are going for Matt Gonzalez because he's a progressive and decent candidate with a background fighting as an attorney against polluters and a record as county supervisor fighting for the poor and working class in San Francisco.

He is the better candidate. I just hope he can run the city. Other liberals have not been able to run the city the way the moderates have (like Feinstein and Brown). Only in SF is Willie Brown a moderate!

9. Latest Poll: Gonzalez Ahead in Race for SF Mayor
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 04:20 AM by eablair3
sorry to rain on your Repug/establishment Dem parade, but here's the latest poll -- Read it and weep :)

GO MATT!!

Poll: Gonzalez Ahead in Race for SF Mayor

Manuel Ramos

Supervisor Matt Gonzalez is not used to being in the lead.

"I'm pleased. I'm flattered," the candidate for mayor of San Francisco said. "The end goal is to win on Election Day, so whenever you hear news like this earlier, you're not really sure."

A CBS 5 poll shows that if the election were held Tuesday, Gonzalez would get 52% of the vote in the race for City Hall. His opponent, Supervisor Gavin Newsom, would get 45%, according to the Survey USA report.

"All the polls have been all over the place, which suggests that this race is hardly over," said Newsom. "It's very much in play."

Which morning show were you talking about? The "unbiased" Ronn Owens Show on KGO? Or, was it the morning show before Ronn Owens? What do you waste your time listening to that crap for? You should tune in to 94.1 FM KPFA and listen to their morning show (7-9am) and Democracy Now that's on at 6-7am and replayed from 9-10am. It's a way better programming, and much more informative.
