Old Iraq military won't be reconstituted

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- The United States is not considering reactivating Iraqi army units, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said at the Pentagon Tuesday.

Although they are not working, roughly 300,000 former officers and foot soldiers each are paid about $50 a month -- more than $1.5 million in all.

Two senators and an Iraqi official have called on the Bush administration to tap old army units for security work in Iraq.

"It's something that one ought to ... have a good reason why it ought not to be done. It may not be possible to do it. And there may be people who know an awful lot more about it than I do," Rumsfeld said.
