Army adds charges against Guantanamo chaplain
Allegations include adultery, making false statements
Tuesday, November 25, 2003 Posted: 6:22 PM EST (2322 GMT)

(CNN) -- The Army charged a chaplain who worked with detainees at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base with four additional counts, including adultery, making false statements and using a government computer to view and store pornography, the U.S. Southern Command said Tuesday.

Army Capt. James Yee was charged with two counts of failing to obey a lawful general order on October 10. (Full story) He was taken into custody September 10 when he returned to the United States from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, and was held at the naval brig at Charleston, South Carolina.

Yee initially had been held on suspicion of espionage and of aiding the enemy, but the two counts of failing to obey orders were the only formal charges military officials initially brought against him.

"Yee will report to the Fort Benning chief chaplain where he will perform duties commensurate to his rank," said a statement from the U.S. Southern Command.

terrorist or is it the sex?

Can't he just go on TV and say "Lord, I have sinned" - seems to work for GOP ministers

2. They're trying to make it about sex, yet again
Listen to AM talk radio -- Yee's case hasn't gotten any traction among the hatemongers. So what does the Army do? They throw in this spurious "adultery" charge, trying to get talk radio to pick up on the meme that Yee is "not only a traitor, he's a sex addict, so let's stick him in front of the firing squad tomorrow."

A despicable act of desperation on the part of the Army. I hope that everyone sees through it.

3. Sounds like a smear campaign to me.
Who the Hell could he commit adultery with in Guantanoamo? Or did they find out that he was seeing another woman before he was assigned to Guantanomo - or after they threm him in prison?

I'd like to know how many officers view pornography on their computers.

4. maybe?
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 10:51 PM by drfemoe
the adultery act was committed with his computer?

The Isl*m law (Sharia) is usually reserved for WOMEN who commit adultery. Men are very very rarely charged for this 'crime'.

I am really curious about what article covers this crime.
Maybe something from the 1800's ?
.. similar to the recent justice department charges against greenpeace?

7. The real story was that the espionage charges were bogus
and that the Chaplain was arrested solely for being Muslim.

5. chaplain
This just makes my ass crave green stovewood! John Asscroft is being his regular fundie self. How can a government charge anyone with adultery? I thought that was the wife's choice. I now can truly state I have heard it all. If it was not so pathetic I would be laughing my head off.

6. Adultery???? They must be pulling my leg.
98% of the sailors I knew in the 50's and 6o's would have been put out of the navy if that was a crime. Can't be.
