Athens hunger strikers have "week to live"
Tue 25 November, 2003 15:05

By Karolos Grohmann

ATHENS (Reuters) - Supporters of five imprisoned anti-globalisation protesters who have been on hunger strike in Greece for up to two months are keeping vigil in what they say has become a death watch.

The five -- two Spaniards, a Syrian, a Briton and a Greek -- are refusing to eat as a protest against their imprisonment since being arrested during riots at a European Union summit in Greece in June. They are awaiting trial on charges of possession of explosives and weapons.

"Doctors last week gave us a time limit until the end of this week," Charis Ladis, the lawyer for the two Spaniards, Fernando Perez and Carlos Martinez, said outside the well-guarded hospital where the two were being treated on Tuesday.

"Theoretically they (all five) could die any minute, or they have a week to live."

edit: I guess they've been allowing water ...

4. Hunger strikes
My opinion on hunger strikes is that if they want to do it, fine. But if they die because of it I will shed no tears.

And people should do real hunger strikes. NO FOOD, NO WATER, NO NOTHING. None of that 'we can drink water and eat broth' crap.

5. what's shocking is that
they would have to do this to avoid an 18 month stint in a greek jail for something they didn't do and everyone knows they didn't do! as fair trials abroad said today, from http://www.news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=2227677 :

“This was not simply a case of maladministration of justice, but one which showed the weakness of a justice system when it fails to implement fundamental rights.”

what a day! from this, http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L26526220.htm : 'Greece authorises forced feeding of hunger strikers' to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3240694.stm : 'Greece to release hunger strikers'

solidarity is our weapon, the truth is our defence! thanks for all the hits on the website from DU! pesc xx
