Economy, Medicare Put Bush on a Roll
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) is on a roll: The economy is roaring, consumers are optimistic, a prescription drug benefit for 40 million Americans awaits his signature, and his campaign war chest is growing ever-fatter.

After steadily rising casualties in Iraq (news - web sites) and differences with allies on trade and other issues, Bush was ready for some good news. He quickly incorporated it into his re-election message Tuesday.

...

Does this sound like BS to anyone but me? My theory is that things are bad enough for Bush that they are trying the Comical Ali approach to PR - just lie you buns off, it'll be over soon anyway.

4. the headline is ridiculous
picture that accompanies it

He is visiting senior citizens here. He is going to take that ball and run with it. The Democrats passed it to him and he is going to score again. I think it a benchmark--the medicare bill. All is just honkey dory under Bush the great white father--all people in Oceania will be very well taken care of. Next---Social security--next--public education--next---separation of church and state a thing of the past--vouchers--next additional bills regulating women's bodies--
next--another war

I am not too optimistic this morning . The passage of the Medicare bill is quite depressing. The Democrats put on a sorry show--indeed.

5. When did the news become a daily scoreboard for Bu**sh**?
Every story now is immediately assigned points in a cynical political game. "Medicare, GNP up 8.2% - Score two points for the Bush team. Who cares what any of this means. We don't have time. We don't care." Good or bad, right or wrong, honest or corrupt? What difference does it make? All that matters is win or lose.

8. The press is still in Glorious Leader mode.
And will be as long as it takes. Too much money rides in those advertising dollars, and that money is banking on a Bush millenium.

I'd say the election is over already, were it not for the sheer moral and intellectual bankruptcy of the Bush administration: there is still plenty of time for it to fuck up.

7. Good Dean - and Daschle - response in article
.. Tom Daschle introduced legislation to repeal several of the bill's most controversial provisions and to allow the importation of lower-priced prescription drugs from Canada and Western Europe. "This debate is not over. It's just beginning," Daschle said.

"The economy will be an issue as long as unemployment continues to be what it is and as long as communities find it difficult to pay their bills," Dean told The Associated Press. "The numbers make people on Wall Street and in the administration feel good, not the average person on the street."...... "The steady death toll has had a tremendous impact. Every state has lost young people. And those communities really feel it. This is a misadventure by the president. Families all over America are paying the price."
