Autodesk Inc. will cut up to 18 percent of its workforce, or 550 to 650 employees, as part of a cost-saving plan, the San Rafael software company said Tuesday.

The firm, which makes special-effects software used in movies and video games, as well as programs for product design and architecture, said the cuts will be spread out over the next four quarters. Autodesk plans to close some facilities, although it has not identified which ones.

As workers are being let go, the company will be hiring at its new facility in Shanghai, China, and in expanding areas such as its project management product.

2. Hmm...
They recently released their latest version of 3D Studio max(6). I guess they decided to fire all the programmers who did that. But look on the bright side as Autodesk sells its upgrades its productivity nuumbers will be GREAT without having to pay all those programmers salaries.

5. and I've been recommending ACAD!
A small firm I work with just upgraded to the latest release. I sent this article out to all the architects I could think of. It's such a disturbing trend.
Who's using a Mac-based program that they like? I must admit I do love Autocad, but I hate my Dell! And the fact that Dell outsources its tech support to India.

7. And this just after announcing a very good Qtr
It stinks, but I don't agree with those that say Clark won't do something about this. He does have a plan to help with this problem, you may not agree with it.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Autodesk soared 16 percent Friday after the software designer and digital content company announced a profit for its fiscal third quarter and predicted above-consensus earnings for fiscal 2005.

The stock rose $3.13 to close at $22.53. Earlier in the session, shares had touched a new 52-week-high of $23.33.

Late Thursday, the San Rafael, Calif.-based company (ADSK: news, chart, profile) reported net income of $22.6 million, or 20 cents a share, for the three months ended Oct. 31, a reversal from the loss of $3.9 million, or 3 cents a share, generated in the prior year's third quarter.
