Houston Chronicle: DeLay fighting subpoena
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 09:42 AM by Richardo
Doesn't want to own up to his pivotal role in Texas reedistricting coup.

A chickenhawk through and through.

AUSTIN -- U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and a second Republican congressman from Texas asked a federal court Tuesday to block Democrats' efforts to question them in a lawsuit challenging the state's new congressional map.

<snip>

In their motion to quash, attorneys Bobby R. Burchfield of Washington and Jonathan D. Pauerstein of San Antonio said no court had ever compelled a member of Congress to submit to a deposition in a redistricting case. *

<snip>

It would be the rare member of Congress who did not keep abreast of the redistricting process in his or her home state," they said. :eyes:

Democratic lawyer Gerald Hebert said DeLay's "deposition is clearly legally significant to this case because, unlike any member of Congress in any prior redistricting process, he unquestionably played the central role in Texas redistricting in 2003."

* Note: Eight Democrats are participating in the case.

My take: DeLay is a chickenshit, antiAmerican scumbag extortionist who is arguably the most serious threat to the exercise of democracy and representative government that we have today.

1. "Turkey of the Year" (Houston Press)
"Top Turkey of the Year - Senator Tom DeLay. Texas has had six flags flying over it, as every amusement-park attendee knows. The flags include those of France, Spain, the Confederate States of America and our very own Republic of Texas.

"Now it flies under a seventh. As 2003 has proved, we are now living in a country named -- like Afghanistan or Uzbekistan -- after the most influential part of the population. Like Turkmenistan, this new country is ruled by a powerful warlord. (The CIA World Factbook says Turkmenistan's president 'retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated.')

"Welcome, then, to DeLayistan -- where absolute control is retained and opposition is not tolerated."

3. quote
"In their motion to quash, attorneys Bobby R. Burchfield of Washington and Jonathan D. Pauerstein of San Antonio said no court had ever compelled a member of Congress to submit to a deposition in a redistricting case."

And until recently no court had ever compelled a sitting president to submit to a deposition in a sexual harassment case. Do you have a point, counselors?

4. Federal court to DeLay
You created this shit, you can eat it.

Buck up and take the responsibility and accept the redistricting's eventual fate -- complete and utter destruction, resulting to a previous redistricting map.

9. Even BETTER! DeLay's TRMPAC is going to be indicted for illegalies...
...in the Texas Congressional Campaigns.

No link, but story on NPR last night detailed TRMPAC's use of proscriped CORPORATE DONATIONS for directed actions on campaigns of Republicans in Texas.

Also, memos were leaked regarding quid pro quo's of Dontate to TRMPAC and get FEDERAL access to DeLay.

GOD I'd love to see that man do the "Perp Walk."

14. Envision him in cuffs.
Heck, let's go the whole hog here and envision him doing the perp walk in the orange jumpsuit. You know he's a pretty dirty dog, so something is bound to catch up with him sooner or later.

On edit: No offense towards actual dogs was intended. :-)
