Oklahoma schools to help collages in Iraq
Collages???? Maybe we need to upgrade a few COLLEGES here as well.

http://www.kotv.com/pages/viewpage.asp?id=54435

(Lawton-AP) -- A team of Oklahoma colleges and universities will offer their expertise to help revive Iraq's higher education system.

Cameron will provide technical support to Iraq's universities and technical colleges to connect Iraqi universities to the Internet.

A grant of almost five (M) million dollars was awarded yesterday to the University of Oklahoma for the project. O-U will partner with other universities in order to meet the goal of improving universities in Iraq.

<snip>

Not that important of a story, but the headline says it all.

8. Well lookee here y'all the title is the part that contains the misspelled
word. You can't expect more from Oklahoma's T.V. stations than you do from those in the rest of the country (read the bs below this story!) especially in Lawton, a major "army town". They may have forgotten how to spell the word "College" since some years ago Oklahoma's Legislature (definitely a match for the Texas Legislature Molly Ivins describes so well) slapped all Colleges in the state with the label "University" so higher tuitions could be charged. (No, I'm not kidding) I'm not sure why OU is written, "O-U" in one place but The University of Oklahoma was a great place after it finally kicked its Jim Crow approach at about the time of the Brown decision and before former Democratic Senator David Boren, a major sellout and whore, was made its president and started bringing in rwnuts to speak. The faculty remembered Oklahoma's past as being a part of the South Central Region's socialist past, they remembered Thomas P. Gore, Gore Vidal's grandfather, one of the first Senators from Oklahoma. They lived in a place where, in most counties, when a person registered to vote there was only one party in which she/he could register, i.e., the Democratic Party. <http://www.ou.edu/special/albertctr/archives/gore.htm> The following is still true of the University (my school!): "OU ranks in the top five in the nation among all comprehensive public universities in National Merit Scholars enrolled per capita and in the graduation of Rhodes Scholars."

U.S.A.I.D ought to be amended though to say, U.S.A.I.D/C.I.A.

Their aim is to meet the goal of the U.S. Agency of International Development to provide any help and support services to Iraqi higher education institutes.

11. The reason they have so many National Merit Scholars enrolled
is because they give a FULL scholarship (including room and board, I think) to all National Merit Scholars. Students of that caliber may not really want to stay here in Okie Bible-Belt hell, but a full-boat scholarship is often too good a deal to pass up. (The daughter of a former colleague was in this position, and stayed here for OU, even though, having traveled extensively in high school through various exchange programs she really wanted to go somewhere more diverse or a smaller school)

16. Ah, the open fly under the buckle on the bible belt...
when I was growing up in Oklahoma people were the opposite of the bible thumpers you see there today. People would write "Jesus Saves" on a rock and someone would come along and add "Green Stamps". I went to school with a kid who had a copy of "The Last Supper " with a notice across the bottom that said, "Love J.C. and the boys"

14. You may not remember that, for a long time there, you had to be
careful driving into Lawton because people would hijack your car just on the outskirts of town. As a Graduate student at OU I taught a Psych class there one semester. Lawton had some great steak houses in those days.

15. I don't think I ever drove into Lawton...but I flew the company plane
there many times. Never got hijacked. ;-)

Can't recall any eateries there, though. Some of the best steak houses in the world (and I've tried a lot of them all over the world) tend to be in such out of the way places, I admit! I was gonna name a few but my kkkkeyboard can't stand much more drool. :D

17. I went to Cameron Coll.
Many years ago. It was a small joint that lived off the Ft. Sill GI's..I was one. I also went to Okie State for a bachelor’s degree in Zoology. OSU has a long history of involvement with 3rd world education. They are experts at it. Go there and you will see.

Oklahoma is near the bottom of the list in State Educational standings. I don’t see Iraq getting much. I left for Florida to continue my education and I would suggest that Iraqi’s consider other options.
