First lady Maria Shriver hands out turkeys in Sacramento
ANNA OBERTHUR
Associated Press

SACRAMENTO - As her husband, new Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, is being criticized by some legislators and activists for proposing cutting spending on programs for children, education and the poor, first lady Maria Shriver spent part of Wednesday handing out donated turkeys and trying to adjust to her new role.

"Nobody likes the cuts, Arnold doesn't like the cuts, there's nobody that takes joy in that," Shriver said of the governor's proposed $1.9 billion in midyear budget cuts. "I think his hope is that California will be able to come back. But that's not that case right now."

Shriver's visit to the Sacramento Food Bank Services was her first solo appearance as first lady, a role the television journalist and mother of four says she is still trying to figure out how to juggle.

"I have no clue how I'll fit all these pieces of my life together," Shriver told reporters. (snip/...)

1. You'd think she knew better
than to give out turkeys and not catch the pun.

7. i wish they'd stop calling her "first lady"
i don't remember the wives of previous CA governors being given that honorific, and i don't think Arnold's wife deserves it either. it gives Arnold more stature than he deserves.

18. A nutcase?
Wow. I never thought of her as a nutcase. Was she a nut case before Arnie waltzed in as governator?

11. Why don't the Republicans have a problem with her last name?
Geesh, considering all the grief Hillary has taken over the years, you'd think this would be an issue. Has anyone ever ONCE heard her referred to as Maria Schwarzenegger? And don't tell me it has anything to do with her being a professional. Hillary had a career as a lawyer, which is part of the reason she chose to keep her name.

15. Maria supported Arnold's budget cuts, saying that...
"we all need to pull together"

Indeed, to take away food from the hungry, health care from the sick and assistance for the needy so that people can save $250 per year on their vehicle license fee for their $35,000 SUV.

Happy Thanksgiving California.

19. Maria- "I have no clue how I'll fit all these pieces of
my life together."

Well, most poor folks have problems fitting together things like paying rent, utilities, getting enough food, getting health care, child care, etc. and on and on.Every Day!
