China Steps Up Threat of Action If Taiwan Passes Referendum Law
<http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?id=10000087&sid=aEowZWZjNAf4&refer=home>

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- China stepped up its threats of action against Taiwan if the island's legislature today passes a bill allowing the public to vote on policy issues.

``We will not sit by and do nothing,'' Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office, was quoted as saying in the Hong Kong editions of China Daily, an official Chinese-government newspaper. ``If a referendum law passes, we will make a strong response.''

Zhang didn't elaborate on what measures China may take.

1. This is a good time for China to attack Taiwan.
What with the US overextended so much in Iraq.

2. Only if they want to lose
China ain't ready to take on Taiwan, much less the U.S. fleet. If China did this, I can guarantee * would win next time after a HUGE victory over the Chinese.

4. Might be nice if you checked
on the losses in NY, Afghanistan and Iraq...and faced a little reality first...before you start predicting any victories over China.

China isn't Grenada.

5. I bet the odds
Taiwan is an island and easy to protect with our navy and air force. China can't match either and doesn't even have the resources to invade the island on its own.

3. My hunch is that China is feeling really pressured because they're
not really ready to take on Taiwan yet, but they feel that the longer the wait, the more entrenched Taiwan's independence movement will become - or, more precisely, the more blatant it will become.

In that spirit, it might make sense for Taiwan to take some bold steps. If they don't do it now, they may be under far greater pressure ten years from now.
