CNN: (17,000) Reservists mobilized for Iraq, Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Troops and their families and employers will soon find out if they will be affected by the Pentagon's latest mobilization of 17,000 reservists for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition those mobilized Wednesday, nearly 8,000 reservists have been alerted for deployment to Iraq and around 700 for deployment to Afghanistan.

The announcements affect Army and Air Force National Guard and Reserves as well as Navy and Marine Corps Reserves.

The Pentagon also said three battalions of Marines and support units -- as many as 3,000 people -- will get orders for deployment to Iraq.

1. The numbers are not adding up
there are 130,000 in Iraq. Even if they drop the count to 105,000 the number of troops being called do not add up.

I believe the One Year boots in Iraq will be changed to 18 mouths for some.

3. The scuttlebutt in my stepsons unit is 1 or 2 years
He calls us and cries. My husband cries all day. I foresee the new year as very difficult for our whole family. And they still havent formally announced a thing to us. They are sticking him in Camp Schnelling in Minnesota for 5 days then sending him back here then, in January, off to what his team leader called "a sandy place with guns".
God damn Bush and God Damn the whole administration.

My son just finished his stint in the Marine Corps active duty, he's now what he calls on inactive reserve, but I wouldn't trust this fascist regime as far as I could throw them, and if he gets called up again, I'm going to encourage him to get out of the country.
My thoughts and prayers (from an agnostic, but for what they're worth) are with your stepson and everybody else out there in this maniac's war.

4. Silly Question - if they gotta send reservists half way around the world

. . how many "defenders" do they even have left on their "own" continent?

. . I know, I know, "defenders" is not quite an accurate term for what the US Military is being used for

But it seems to me that "Homeland Security" is a wee bit at risk when the majority of the Armed Forces aren't anywhere near their own country ??

5. Not a dumb question at all....
Think of the jobs a lot of the reservists have too. My cousin is in the Army Reserve, home from Iraq right now but due to go back next week. His real job is a Deputy Sheriff in upstate NY. So many of the reservists and Guard have first responder jobs in the first place. You are right, I really don't feel too secure in the homeland. I feel so sad for my cousin, his family, my nephew and everyone made to fight for the BFEE. :(

11. Hmm - just curious, is his job guaranteed when he returns ?

. . I'm not sure how that works, if they guarantee their jobs on their return, I mean, SOMEONE has to fill those positions vacated by people gone off to "war" ?

9. I wish we couldclose the borders right after he leave US airspace.
Just don't let him back in. He would be happier with his masters in Saudi Arabia anyway. Of course Israel would be nice too. He could mind meld with Sharon to learn even more efficient ways of subjugating Arabs.
