Mrs. Claus Spices Up Thanksgiving Parade

NEW YORK (AP) - This year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade promises to have a little more New York sass.

The annual balloon-filled romp through Manhattan will feature an enormous turkey, a frog, a big bird and a fat, lazy cat. Somewhere in the mix there also will be Mrs. Santa - portrayed by a man.

Actor Harvey Fierstein - Broadway's most famous drag queen - was set to appear as his ``Hairspray'' character, Edna Turnblad - but dressed as Mrs. Claus - on the Percy and the P-Birds float, a group of penguin puppets.

Fierstein said he had grown up watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. ``When they asked me to be in it, I was so thrilled,'' he said in a telephone interview late Wednesday.

Is that a jab? Many queers, myself included, are NOT ashamed of our drag queens, bucko. They are a major part of our history, and they were the first to stand up and be counted at Stonewall. I'm rather proud to see a queen stand up on Thanksgiving Day (the most hetero of holidays) and remind America that we are a part of the family, and we deserve a place at the table.
