They had to call ahead. I remember the European Airlines bitching the last time Air Force one appeared: they had to re-route their their flights etc.
An unanounced 747 enetring the Airspace would have caused a reaction - in any nation.
An escort had to be arranged as well - AFAIK is the range of Fighters nothing like that of a Jumbo.

The question is: when was the decision made to use the plan.
